Had my MkI for many years now (2.3 GhiaX) and have never much investigated if it has an alarm. I do get a little red light flashing on the door when locked, but in many years I've never had the alarm go off - which is unusual for me with cars! Can anyone confirm if I do have an alarm - and if so how I can test it - would just be good to hear it sound and know it's working if it's there...!

There are various specifications for the alarm, the base is simply operated by a door being opened etc.

Do you have bulges with a mesh in them on your 'B' pillers?

No - nothing like that there. Does this mean I have no alarm?

Probably.

Put a window down, lock the door, give it a minute and reach in and open the door from the inside.

OK - just sat in the car and locked the doors with remote and waited a few mins. Tried to open door but of course the levers are de-activated and will not open the doors until unlocked with remote. So with everything still locked I tried the ignition and to my surprise the car started. No alarms amongst any of this..... Something sounds wrong to me here....?

try pulling on the bonnet latch/handle,get out of the car and lock it then open bonnet hopefully this should set the alarm off(if you have 1),if you take a look under the passenger seat you should find the central locking ecu/alarm ecu, iirc if you have 3 blocks of wires comming out of it then you have an alarm if only 2 then just an immobilizer.
