Just had my Gal MOT'd (Mkll 2006) and although it passed they commented that the two rear light bulbs had failed.

They then said that the light bulbs were the same as on the Mondeo, as in if it fails, a "secondary" part of the bulb remains lit in order that you still have lights

Is this correct, as i have never heard of this before??

This is part of the limp home mode that has been built into the galaxy/sharan etc. When your brake lights fail to work the car thinks that your brake may be faulty so it turns on the fog lights for protection, there is nothing worse than a car with no brake lights working. There is too switches under the dash that the brake pedal is controlling, the first is for the brake light and the second is for the limp home mode. Now if they replaced the brake light switch which is self adjusting it might have adjusted a little too much and won't switch on. Remove the bottom panel that covers the brake pedal and try and re-adjust the switch till you can get the lights working again, its not easy and not much room. If this dosn't work remove the switch connect it back onto the wiring harness and manually work the switch while checking if the brake lights come on, if not replace the switch, if it does work pull the top part of the switch ( the moving part ) out to the last you will hear a few clicks and re-intsall.

I think they were just referring to the fact the Galaxy has two parking bulbs each side. So if one fails, there is still one left and is not a MOT fail, just an advisory.

You should really have checked your bulbs before taking it in for an MOT.

As far as i was aware my lights did work!

I checked them last week and both rear lights were on

Brake lights work OK also

The point of my question was "does the rear light bulbs have a "failsafe" element in them??

Thanks

Dave where did you take it? ...... Funny ol thing .... My lad took his Fiesta yesterday to Furrows in Telford and I checked all the lights yesterday before I came into work. It failed on the N/S rear bulb which had apparently blown! What really annoyed me was the fact they charged him

There is no fail safe/limp home mode in a light bulb. If the filament fails, the bulb fails.

What else do you expect from a 30p bulb? Furrows obviously charge about
