Mine was done in the autumn along with the back box by an exhaust place. No mention of problems. As long as you disconnect at all joints and maybe drop it off the rubber hangers it should "feed" out from above the axle easily enough (wait for warmer weather, or a nice workshop!)

it's not as easy as it first seems. I found I had to;

1) remove the aux heater exhaust pipe.

2) carefully remove the take-away food tray foil heat-shields.

3) split the joints, I found the rear seems to be a rust trap.

4) remove rubbers.

5) gently pull, twist and generally manouvre the mid section out over the rear subframe.

I was fortunate enough to be doing this at a friend's house where he had an inspection pit so I can't remember whether we needed the extra room under the car.

Hope this goes someway to help.

I did mine, and I think you do need a fair bit of room underneath the car. I didn't have to remove any heat shields, but it was very tight indeed.

The replacement slid back in without any problems, much easier.

Mine is a Mk1.

I changed my exhaust myself, i cut the old one away then had a bit of a punch up with the centre pipe. It was very awkward to get over the rear axle. I found i had to turn it to the side as i shoved it over the axle.
