Was wondering if someone could give me a pointer... I've got a R-reg '98 Galaxy TDi, 90Bhp Aspen model. I've been trawling the forums and found Vag-com as a diagnostic tool.

Given how often Ford want to charge me

closing the erg valve may help stop the clogging of the intake manifold but wont up the hp of the engine greatly  you could try a chip or a tuning box! :blink holds breath and waits for SA to add his 2p's worth

as for vag com its been mentioned a few times on the forum, would the expense justify the amount of times you would use it?

as for the manufacturer of the engine i would say it would be a vw unit, i thought the ford 1.9 tdi unit was only available as a 110/5 output range

Chip or tuning box? Do go on....

Engine details (from handbook):

1.9TDi with Catalyst. 1896CC, 90BHp at 4000RPM. 202Nm torque at 1900RPM.

Max Revs: 5100, Idle 900, Direct Injection 1-3-4-2. EZD 33 Glow plugs, EFL 60 Oil.

Friend had a N-Reg original Sharan when they were first introduced. It's been a long time since he had it, but I swear the engine looks identical. (His was TDi too).

just a couple of sites for you to view, i'm not saying its a good thing or a bad thing to do but its up to you!

galaxy and sharan share the basically the same running gear apart from a couple of engines the 2ltr and 2.3ltr petrol engines which are ford units

Hmmm... 130BHp to 155BHp.... I wish... ** runs off to Seat website and sees the new Alhambra 130BHp SX with goodies and the tunit module for

All TDI engines VW make

Ford / Seat / VW Only petrol engines differ

Ford only now do TDCI engines with guts

Just reset my service interval reminders on computer 98 Ghia X

It was a VW part

All standard if its TDI Vw stuff will plug in and sort

Good Luck

I've been toying with the idea of the VAG-COM software and cables for a while now.

I've just ordered a cable and downloaded the software from the web.

The free version of VAG-COM i think just gives codes, you then need the Haynes manual or Bentley to decipher the code.

The main reason i took the plunge and bought it was because I have a flashing Glowplug light and have checked all the usual, bulbs, switches etc and I think its the dreaded MAF.

Hopefully the software will help me find the problem.

I will keep you informed if its any good or not.

By the way, I've also got a R reg 90BHP TDI.

If VAG-COM is of any use and the information it gives me useable, the next stages are chipping, forced induction and maybe LPG.

I've not seen anything on this forum on induction kits ! anybody had any dealings with them.

lpg on a tdi ! your talking serious money! ok it can be done and it can have a similar effect as nitrous on a petrol engine! as for induction kits! buy a couple of maf sensors while your there! most induction kits consist of a pre oiled filter, any excess oil gets sucked through the filter body and can contaminate the maf!

but if your still interested i have a site that does them for galaxy's  take a look at........induction kits

ChrisH - I had the flashing glowplug light. It happened after a 'cheaper' garage replaced my brake servo. Apparently it just needed resetting on the ECU...

Nimrod, you could be right about the induction and MAFs, they're a pain in the a--e at the best of times. As for the lpg, i too have seen information that it has a similiar effect as NOS (maybe I'm too old for this kind of fun ! but it would be interesting to see all the little Saxo, Clio drivers faces in the rear view mirror as you leave them standing), havent looked at the costs involved and if i will get a return on the investment.

Dale, My light started flashing after my battery went flat and had to be jump started by the RAC.

I've always thought my MAf was faulty and that this little episode final did something???

Have been told my OBD2 cable is in the post, I cant wait. i hope its not a big let down like the TIS cd.

Well, the lead arrived.

I connected it up to the laptop, connected the other end to the Galaxy, started the engine and hey presto it worked.

Ran the diagnostic option to look for faults and found 2.

00575 - intake manifold pressure- 17-10 control difference - intermittent

and

17978 - Shareware version - to decode all dtcs

P1570 - 35- 00 - please register/activate

I presume the second code means something, i just need to find out from one of the VAG-COM sites.

The following morning i plugged it in again and ran the monitoring feature and exported the readings of the school run to a CSV file.

I've no idea what i'm doing (which might be dangerous ) but in time i will learn what to monitor/ look at.

Anyway, at the moment i feel as though the lead wasn't a waste of money because it is at least telling me something.

I will keep you all updated on what i fix/break once i learn more about the software.

;)
