I think this is a new one as I have looked through the threads and cannot find an example. On 3 or 4 occassions (not everytime) after selecting reverse the car goes backwards on tick over, I try to speed up by putting my foot on the accelerator but although my foot could be hard down the engine speed does not increase. I do not think it is a G/Box problem but a throttle problem (are they fly by wire) any idea's anyone.

Well this wont be much help to you, but yes they are fly by wire.

I'm also inclined to think you wont get much response on this thread, due to the rarity of your auto deisel,as is mine, and i had no response when i asked for ideas, about "clutch-slip" in 4th and 5th.

The car is currently in my local ford dealers being dissmantled.

I have no experience of your symptoms

There is a series of known "concerns" with the auto box.

One is that unless the car is absolutely stationary when you engage reverse, then you cannot rev the engine - sounds like your problem. Make sure the car is at rest with footbrake applied before you change from "D" to "R". If problem persists, you have ...

Second known fault - engine will not rev when car is in reverse. Reason unknown to me, and I don't think that Ford know why either. May be worth contacting a VW garage, as the diesel and auto box are sourced by Ford from VW (box apparently comes from Japanese manufacturer).

There are other concerns with the box, some involve expensive rebuilds and/or replacement of the entire box.

Hope you still have a valid warranty.

Hi Bri,

I have just bought an X reg Diesel Auto and experience the same problem, up until now I thought it to be completely random, but having tested it by putting into reverse whilst still creeping forward have managed to recreate it twice.

Did you ever find a resolution with your car, I am just about to go back to the trader who I bought the car from so would welcome any info possible.

i used to drive an vw t4 and if you had your foot on the brake and try to rev up the ecu would not allow it possible same prob its not unknown for the brake switches to go pear shapped. there are two and there are pleanty of threads on this site about them

I must admit I have never noticed this "feature", perhaps it is to stop you accidentally shooting backwards by mistake (I've done in in an auto Fiesta). It certainly does not work the other way round as I have often put it into drive when reversing and used the revs to slow the car down then accelerate away.

The car always moves forwards or backwards when in gear and no revs and on an uphill incline it stands still when in drive at traffic lights without the brakes, ie it won't ever roll back (well not on the hills I have tried)

If no one has come up with an answer I will try it out at the weekend and let you know.

Either we have a problem, or you need to find a steeper hill!

Our 1.9TDI will roll back on a relatively steep hill

For what it's worth I've never experienced any weird effects of the kind described with my diesel auto, which suggests it's a fault rather than a characteristic of the box. However, a little voice at the back of my mind tells me that in some model years, there was indeed a safety measure of the kind described by Mr Tower that prevented you from engaging reverse if the car was still moving forwards. I was aware of this when I ordered my 2002 model and thought it would prove an irritation, but when the car arrived I found to my delight that there was no problem at all in engaging reverse when still moving forward and I often do it when parking. So I think this feature must have been discontinued at some point, perhaps with the facelift.

Hi All,

I have a 1996 P ford Galaxy 2.8V6 Ghia X and It will engage reverse but it only creeps backwards reving the engine makes little or no difference at all. It drives forwards as it should do without any issues. Can anyone shed any light on this issue.

Thanks.
