splodge Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Hi,Looking for help with a problem on my auxiliary heater. I have a 2003 mk11 galaxy and the auxiliary heater does not work have connected it up to vag-com and it displays this fault :- 01414 - Combustion-Air Blower (V6) 36-00 - Open Circuit I have tested the unit with vag-com and the air blower does not spin up. I have taken the unit apart and the motor spins freely. This fault repeats for 5 times then the unit has to be reset with vag-com. I have read all the posts here on the forum and have not found anyone else with this same fault, I am scratching my head at the moment and would greatfully receive any more knowledge as to how or were to get this fault solved. Thanks Gary Quote
Mirez Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Open circuit means that an electrical path isn't present, in other words at some point in the circuit there is a break. That could be a fuse is blown or missing, an internal break in the wiring or at worst an internal coil fault with the blower motor/controller If you take the unit apart again get a volt meter on the motors terminals, then try and spin it with vag-com and see if you get a reading on the meter. If you do then the motor has probably failed, if you don't then you have a wiring (or controller) failure. Quote
splodge Posted January 4, 2009 Author Report Posted January 4, 2009 I have spun the motor up when the unit was apart, it is an 8.4 volt motor and it spins when i connected directly with a dc power source, as for the wiring everything looks perfect and untouched, and yes I know that is a big statement as I cannot see if any wires are broken inside it is just a general statement of overall condition, and until I touched the unit I would say it has never been touched before. My overall feeling is the controller unit inside the end plate of the auxiliary heater may be at fault, can this be purchased separately maybe ? or can I get somewhere to service it ? Is there a separate fuse for the motor or is the only fuse for the unit itself. Vag-com talks with the unit and the only fault is the one I posted earlier repeatedly  Gary Quote
Mirez Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Ahh thought you had spun it by hand not with a power source. The fuses (3, 12 and 13), whilst all connected to the aux heater, don't do individual parts of it so highly unlikely to be one of those, so I would say you are probably correct in a controller failure  It can be replaced seperately, I've seen the exploded parts catalogue and its shown as one "end" piece complete with PCB - but from where and for how much.... Quote
splodge Posted January 4, 2009 Author Report Posted January 4, 2009 The from where  and how much is a concern for me is there anywhere in the uk that has parts for these things?I seem to remember in all my reading of the threads that somebody had a unit repaired in the newcastle area? for Quote
Mirez Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 (edited) Bizarrly there is an ECU on ebay at the moment: Ebay Link Worth checking part numbers, failing that try "Breaking galaxy" in the ebay search and you'll get a few Mk2's - then email the sellers, I doubt some of them even know they have it so you might get lucky and get a whole one reasonably cheaply  Edited January 4, 2009 by Mirez Quote
splodge Posted January 4, 2009 Author Report Posted January 4, 2009 That is very bizarre !! Looking at it, that is what I need, the only thing that is stated as 96-00 and that would be for the lower output heater, mine is the D5W-Z i believe which is the same as the galaxy you have also. It does give me a pointer though that it may be available from VAG maybe, and also gives an indication of the likely price from them  This seller knows what they cost from the main stealers, all that said that price if I was being honest is what i was expecting to be having to pay. That does make me tempted to go down the secondhand route and take the pieces off both and hopefully make one good  Still not sure !! Gary Quote
splodge Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 Just to update my problem, Have brought a second hand aux heater last week now, from a breaking 53/04 model with 47k on the clock, got it for a bargain I believe Quote
Lewty Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Help needed here with a faulty auxiliary heater, I have a 2002 1.9 TDI, noticed this morning loads of smelly fumes coming from the under side of the vehicle, when I looked, there was white smoke and raw diesel dripping from the exhaust of the heater. I have since buying the vehicle 12 months ago always had a problem with poor heating capability, though never seen the smoke and diesel until this morning. I have gathered from this thread that it can be a common problem with the Galaxy, though can't find any reference to the smoke and diesel from anyone else. Before I start stripping things down, particularly in this weather, has anyone any ideas what the problem is ? Quote
gregers Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 could be glow plug, there is a very small thread  on the forum about aux booster heaters, should tell you all you need to know :D Quote
