pcshak Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 Hi Seasons Greetings to All,Its almost Xmas and yes the car problems start SODS Law.I did the routine oil change on the Old lady i.e. filter and oil, I also changed the the pulley on the Alternator cos it was causing the tensioner to rattle and the belt was jumping about. Anyway after doing this I went for a test drive and must've driven 100yds and the oil light came on along with a loud continuous alarm(Bleeeeepppppp). I immediatley switched off the car, checked the level of oil level after 5mins this was fine right at max. Started the car again it was fine, drove on for another 5-10mins then it happened again, oil light and alarm. Each time I switch it off and start the car it goes away then comes back again after a say 5mins. This morning I drove it for a couple of miles then it started to do the same again, this time it didn't want to restart as if the battery didn't have enough power to turn the starter over. Has anyone suffered the same problem or can someone suggest what the cause of this could be, I'd appreciate any advice. I want to try and get this sorted out before Xmas as we need the transport. Thanks Sam Quote
sepulchrave Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 Disconnect the oil pressure switch to stop the light and alarm from sounding or take the switch out and give it a good clean. If there is something else wrong with it, it's not going to be something you can easily fix in the next couple of days. Did you use a very thin grade of oil in a very worn engine when you changed it, if so then chuck in some cheap thick 20W50 and the light should stay off. You don't mention engine type or mileage which would help. Quote
pcshak Posted December 21, 2008 Author Report Posted December 21, 2008 Thanks for your suggestion, sorry I did forget to mention it's a TDi 110bhp Mk1 W reg done 110K Miles. Is the audible alarm normal, cos I've never heard it before? The oil I used was a part synthetic 10w/40W. I'll check the Oil pressure switch, is this the one on top of the oil filter housing?and let you know how I get on. Cheers Quote
sepulchrave Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 I think there are two different oil pressure switches, you'll have to pull the plugs to find out which one is malfunctioning since they look the same. The audible alarm is from the pressure switch which functions only after the engine is running, the other pressure switch only puts the red light on the dash which goes out when you crank the engine. I used to occasionally and briefly get the oil light and buzzer in my 16 valve Golf during very hard cornering which was caused by oil surge. If you want to be sure that your oil pump is functioning properly you can look in the cam cover, if it's dry in there then you have a serious problem, otherwise you don't and it's perfectly safe to drive it. pcshak Posted December 26, 2008 Author Report Posted December 26, 2008 Hi Sorry have been away for a few days, just to give you an update, the problems was the oil pressure switch, the wire was frayed not a good connection with the spade connector, replaced this abd hey presto, no audible alarm or light.Really appreciate your help sepulchrave saved me a lot of headache probably saved me a few bob as well as I'm sure if I'd taken it into Frauds thay would've had a feild day with me.
