My car is uneconomical to repair. it is a catagory c. the assessor said c and d were the same cats. its been valued at 1100 quid.

i need to know what i would need to do to keep the car on the road. im going to try and keep it, ive been told by the assessor it wouldnt cost me much to salvage, yet my insurers say one third of the value.

the salvage peeps are wanting to pick my car up on friday.. i cant let that happen as i will be without car.

so please, help here as to what to do.

Cat C and Cat D are not the same.

Cat D vehicles are less extensively damaged than cat C, they may require very little work to put back on the road. Often the insurer will demand surrender of the MOT, in which case you need to MOT the vehicle to put it back on the road.

Cat C vehicles are beyond economical repair and may be structurally damaged. In such cases you will need to surrender the V5 and MOT to the insurers and before the car goes back on the road it will need a VIC (Vehicle identity check) at

I'm fooked then :(

looks like i will need to find another car, as cheap as possible.

i cant believe all this., i really cant. coz of her ive just lost my only means of getting my kids to and from school. im stressed out with it all... i just cant believe it.

there is no point in me trying to hold onto it. the assessor said it was a cat c, yet ther is no structural damage that i can see. i dont know what to do for the best now.

is it right that if my car is a total loss as it is, then my insurers will cancel my policy, and untill the insurers sort out everything, if i get another car, i have no no claims? as if that is so.. i am well and truely butt fooked.

Sorry to hear about your problems with your beloved Galaxy, its just awful when these things happen. I would be tempted to allow the insurance company to take it away, and buy another one with the proceeds, here is a link to one I found that look ok on AutoTrader.

Or this one, but be quick !

or try the motor auctions, I got mine from one:

Have you done any research as to real Market value? - if you can find vehicles similar to yours at a higher price then you can use that as a lever to get the insurer up the offer.

Cat C is "possible structural damage" - in other words the assesor doesn't know and/or can't be bothered as in his opinion its a banger anyway :( . It would need a geometry check to establish structural damage plus a new MOT and VIC after repairs.

The vehicle would have zero resale value having a Cat C stamp and may be very costly to reinsure.

Look around for a replacement car. Keep the pressure up on the insurance as far as pursuing the guilty party and consider legal action against her.

You should be able to transfer your cover to a replacement car, (with the usual "adjustments" and ammendment fees :( ) - and you should add these costs to any legal claim you make against the other party.

In the meantime, phone around some taxi companies for school run quotes - don't know, but should be quite competitive as taxis arent that busy at those times and someone might do you a deal for a block booking. Its close to Christmas shutdown for school, if its not resolved by new year, maybe the little angels can all "catch flu" for a week or so ;) ...after all theres a lot about....

from when i had my accident, iirc in litigation they expect you to keep your costs down to a minimum, but keep all receipts,buses/taxis/friends running you around etc etc this can all be claimed back from the 3rd partys insurance, and argue with them over the value of your car,

dunno if they will tell you to dispose of the car yourself? (they did with mine)you might be able to get some more cash by selling the parts.

I literally cannot afford any extra outlay! i cannot afford for my insurance to double untill this is all sorted out. i cannot afford to buy another car, and what the hell can i get for 750 quid? i have a people carrier for a blooming reason. i cannot afford to lose my no claims. all this because some some woman didnt see my galaxy on the flaming roundabout!!

seatkid, my angels cant catch flu... my 7 yr old would go up the wall if i kept her off school when it is on.. and her going up the wall is not pretty and she gets pretty aggressive. She is to be statemented because at the age of 7, she has a learning age of 5, lives in her own little world, has autism, has dyspraxia, she has a lot of problems and school is one thing she loves and she hates not being able to go to school on a weekend or school holidays. i cannot disrupt her schooling.

she doesnt understand what tomorrow means and counts days by the number of sleeps. the next day is one sleep away , not tomorrow as she cant understand that.

Contact social services, explain the situation and see if some help is available. Childrens welfare is, after all, a high priority.

We have been through the statementing process with our son. He's 23 now and still has problems which is complicated even more as he now has a 20 month old boy.

Doing a statement is horrible as you have to describe your own flesh and blood problems in detail.

If you want any advice, pm me and I'll get the wife to have a chat.

Good luck with the galaxy by the way.

the sap review was awful, hearing how she is from all the people there. it was heart breaking. the thing is, she doesnt know there is anything wrong with her. she is quite content in her own little world, and doesnt understand that if she wants something, she has to ask..she just says why is no one getting me a drink etcc..when she hasnt asked.

I have been told i will have to describe what she is like, at home she can be very aggressive, torments yet she sees it as playing... she is a loving little girl who i am frightened for . she can just vanish whilst out shopping, ive lost her in ikea even with one of the eldest stuck to her like glue, she would walk off with anyone who says a kind word to her.. she loves the whole world you see and sees no bad in anyone or anything.

i will drop you a pm.. as i need all the help i can get, as of yet i have no help at home for her.i get no additional financial help for the nappies etcc that she needs.as she also has a bowel problem and bed wets which i am told is common in girls with all the probs she has.

it saddens me, it really does. I hate the fact that after 5 years of fighting, i have been proven right that there was something wrong, but also relief that i was right.. and it breaks my heart to know that i was right.I look at her playing, smileing, hear her laughing, i see her confusion when asked a question, and i just want to cry.i want to do all that i can to help her.. yet i dont even know where to begin.

but :-

with all the help we as taxpayers give to other groups in our comunity it is disgusting that no help appears to be available to one of our own there is nothing wrong with caring for others but i for one still think charity(meaning help and goodwill) should start at home

if i had the means i would help you myself but as a father of 8 christmas is a financial kick in the B****

hope you get sorted and i for one am thinking of you this christmas

The symptoms you describe match exactly what our son has/had. He is labelled with Aspergers which is recognised as a medical problem for which he gets an allowance.

He was awarded 25 hours per week support throughout his school life. That's one to one every day. What pi**ed me off is the school used those hours to support other children with problems whose parents couldn't be bothered to go through statementing.

Like you said, the things you have to say and listen to about your loved one is heart breaking.

You are not alone even though you think you are.

Someone could have that back on the road in next to no time, for the cost of an indicator and bit of body hammering or a replacement wing......but the bloody inspector too bloody idle to think for a second.....or maybe he's tipped his mate off to break it up for ebay.......

yup, they did indeed, i argued it, but they were adament it was a cat c write off.

according to the assessor,

new bumper

new front wing

new indicator

auto electrician to reset/check airbag light

labour

vat

he went on ford prices. ford labour costs. which amounted to a sum over the value of the car which = a write off, the airbag light made it a cat c. when i recieved the letter the other day i did ring up my insurance company and tried to argue my case, there was no structural damage as indicative of a cat c, that if anything it should be a cat d. and that i could repair it myself .

Noooooo.. sorry, it is a cat c which means uneconomic to repair.. do these people know nothing??

Even the ford garage were amazed it was classed as a cat c.. i did point out to my insurance that on ebay there were cat cs with front/ rear ends smashed in, crumpled up and that mine looked nothing like it. the guy who came to pick it up said is that it??!! i said yup, he said beggers belief.
