butch Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 Hello to all hope someone can help me out i have a 1999 tdi think its the 110bhp, i was driving the car the other day and it just stoped on?, i have power at the dash the car will turn over but it just wont start and i see that the glow plug light on the dash will not light up, so i think that may be part of my fault, i did take a look at the dev filter and it was empty so i think i may have a fuel fault, i did see some thing on here about relay 109 do you think that may be my fault? thank to all for any help steve Quote
seatkid Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 You need to check what engine you have 90 / 110bhp :- ?? If the fuel filter is really empty then could be 1. No fuel in tank 2. Blockage in fuel lines Try putting some diesel in, it will require a lot of cranking to pull fuel and fill the filter before it will start The Mk1 relies on mechanical lift pump - located in the fuel injection distributor pump which has a fuel cut-off solenoid which is controlled by the ECU - no relay. 115 bhp (PD) engine :- IIRC This has an electric fuel pump located in the fuel tank Quote
butch Posted December 6, 2008 Author Report Posted December 6, 2008 hi seatkidthanks for the infothere is fuel in the car it says 120 to empty, i dont have any power to the fuel cut off solenoid but if i put 12v to the solenoid i can here it click open but it still wont start then even if i fill the filter, i get about 3 beeps from under the dash? do you think it may be the 109 relay? steve Quote
f0ster Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 start with the basics, make sure the timing belt has not snapped, prise back the top of the belt cover for a look, Quote
butch Posted December 7, 2008 Author Report Posted December 7, 2008 Hi thanks for the info on the cam belt, and it looks all ok steve Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) Butch, I think SeatKid has a point. If you mean 120 miles to empty, I reckon that to be less than one quarter. Some time ago, I had that much in my tank and I left it ticking over on steep downward slope and it died. To be fair, the gauge did register empty, but that was due to the slope. It registered nearly 1/4 on level ground. It took a can of diesel and 3 days to get it going and then only after a recharge and some pretty bl00dy minded cranking. There's a clear fuel pipe feeding the pump/injection control unit at the front of the engine. Can you see anyting happening there when you crank it? Silly thought, try filling the filter manually. butch Posted December 10, 2008 Author Report Posted December 10, 2008 Hi Scorpiorefugee thanks for the info, i may just try and put some more fuel in the tank, when i had a look in the fuel filter the first time it was empty so it may be out of fuel, its just i have had it down in the red with not a fault, and do you know when i turn the car over to try and start it it just beeps at me? i had this happen when i put a new fuel filter on and im not sure i know what it is, i had to fill the filter to start the car it just wont start if you dont fill the filter first. thanks steve Quote
Mirez Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Depends on the number of beeps but the common cause is low battery, which you could now have with repeated cranking  Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 If you are cranking to get fuel up to the pump it is necessary to do it continuously as I believe, until you get the air out, it just runs back when you stop. IMOP  Quote
butch Posted December 10, 2008 Author Report Posted December 10, 2008 thanks for that will give it a try, let you know how i get on steve Quote
