Noise From Ac Compressor

hi all

98 tdi

switched the air con on to clear some mist today and noticed when the compressor engaged there is an intermitent sort of grating sqwaking kind of noise. on and off. still there when revving the engine as well.

goes away when ac turned off. does anyone recognize this , i wonder if the pulleys will still be ok when running with no air con on or could it cause a problem at anytime. the comp is quite old.

if its a screeching noise it could be the clutch plate to the a/c pump coming loose,this happened to mine and iirc this has been posted recently aswell.

turns out to be one of the 2 fans that is the culprit, is it ok to leave it alone and see what happens, will it just stop working, only makes the noise now and again. would the other keep working if one stops ? thanks
