Hi, as a newbie, may I have a few silly questions plz? I have a 2002 model Galaxy 2.3, which came with 2 keys: one remote (with 2 batteries and a removable chip inside) and a "slim" key. I lock/unlock the car manually because the batteries in the remote key have been dead for a long time. Now I decided to replace the batteries. Yes, I have read the FAQ but it made me a bit more confused...

I just wonder what is the role of the removable chip (PATS ?) inside the remote key?

How is it possible that I can lock/unlock + start the engine with the "slim" key, which has no PATS at all?

Do I need to re-program the remote key after the battery replacement?

Your help is much appreciated. More questions may follow after the first unsuccessful attempt...

Its part of the immobiliser system (I think it stands for Programmable Anti Theft System) - not to be confused with remote locking which is entirely different and does not use the PATS chip.

It also has a PATS chip in the key - you just cant get to it.

Do I need to re-program the remote key after the battery replacement?

General consensus seems to indicate Yes, however I have never "had" to. Programming the key actually programs the car's remote module to accept the remote fob for remote locking.

PATS programming is not required, and can only be carried out at dealers AFAIK.

hi

this is a bit more my field than engines

i believe using vag-com you can access the cars ecu and program the pats section allowing new keys to be added and old ones deleted also turn off/on the cars ability to reprogram extra keys

ive not played with it yet but will be soon

will let you know how i go on

Thanks for your responses. I have replaced the batteries with 2x brand new Varta CR2016 (3V) ones. My experiences are a bit strange: the red LED just came ON intermittently while pressing the UNLOCK button on the key. AFAIK the LED should be lit every time when you press any button. I opened again the keyfob and carefully cleaned the contacts. No result! The LED was never lit again...

I re-checked the polarity of the batteries. (Obviously, + is on the top, - on the bottom, producing 6 Volts altogether, and there is a small metallic plate between the 2 batteries). The 2 micro switches under the LOCK/UNLOCK buttons nicely click so I don't suspect any malfunctioning there. I don't try to reprogram the key until I manage the LED working again.

Any idea what can be wrong? Thanks in advance.

BTW, I noticed that there wasn't any chip (PATS) that can be dropped off from the keyfob. The chip is actually soldered on a PCB, which may become loose. A tiny black plastic stuff CAN drop off but it's just a cover for the chip.

Thats not the PATS chip, thats the remote IC and its cover. The PATS chip is actually stuck in the keyend......

It comes out easily!!

The + end of the batteries point toward the IC.

Wow, what a fast response! Thanks so much, seatkid, for the great illustrations. Now I know at least what the PATS chip is and where it is located...

But still got no idea why the LED doesn't react for pressing any buttons.

Last weekend I bought a "genuine Sharan/Galaxy/Seat/Skoda" keyfob on eBay. Some robots or built-in agents ;) pushed the price high up above 20+ GBP. Anyway, I won... However, the guy who sold it to me, did not clarify in time that actually

1) It was a 433 MHz version instead of 433.92 MHz. It matters a lot because it failed to respond to several attempts of reprogramming efforts

2) The fob cannot be attached to my original key part due to incompatibility (see here: http://i36.tinypic.com/9jf28x.jpg )

3) On the photo that he provided http://i34.tinypic.com/mkix6h.jpg it seemed much the same keyfob as my Galaxy's

Yes, you can call me stupid but I was not aware that the exact version I would have needed = 5WK4 790/97/98 (orig Siemens) instead of Hella... :o Now I have a useless "genuine Skoda" fob and still miss a working one for my Galaxy. That's about my first (and perhaps the last) eBay transaction...

Surely you can get a refund under distance selling regs andalso under misrepresentation of goods.

Have you contacted the seller and explained?

Yes, seatkid, I have contacted the seller. It seems that we are coming to a resolution because he offered a replacement fob. Unfortunately, it will cost me another 6 Edited by Nuc

Issue resolved! I have received the replacement fob. Reprogramming took just a few seconds, thanks to this wonderful board for the instructions. Now the remote works like a charm.

I just want to repeat: part number (5FA 007 680 =/= 5WK4 790/97/98) and frequency (433.92 MHz =/= 433 MHz) do matter a lot.

Hi,

I have browsing the forum and did not find clear procedure for reprogramming the fob key.How did you reprogram yours?I have one Master key for ignition and one for unlock.Tried a few ways from here but didn't work.

P.S I cant download from the forum and could not read some topics attached for downloading here.

you need 3+ posts to download/view pictures here - programming remote is detailled in the faq link 7 - click on the link in my sig for the faq

Here some more details about my issue.

-The car start with the Master key

-The car does not start with the fob key (5WK4 790/97/98)

-When insert the fob key and turn it to position II for more than 1 min.,read error code on the LED 1.3 (the key is not recognized)

-The car lock/unlock with the fob key

I have tried some of the procedures in this forum but did not work.

is your car a mk 1 or a mk 2?if its a mk2 iirc you need 2 working keys to be able to program any new keys,if you only have 1 key then its a trip to the dealers or a mobile locksmith that has all the gear to reprogram all your keys,

if your car can be locked/unlocked with your remote key but doesnt start the car, then either it needs to be programed to the car or you may be missing the pats chip from the key???????

its all on here somewhere think you need to do a search on here to find it.

You have either lost the pats chip (if original fob) or if its a new fob, then you need to install the correct pats chip (from an original key) or if it was supplied with a pats chip, the PATS chip must be programmed by a dealer. AFAIK you cannot program the PATs chip - it requires special equipment. Don't confuse this with remote key programming which is only for the remote locking function and has nothing to do with the PATS

The PATS chip is the beast that talks to the immobiliser. Passive Anti Theft System

It sounds like the pats chip has fallen out when the battery was changed.

You should be able to use one from one of your spare keys ( if you have one ! ).

Can I check a point please?

When I place the key in the lock and turn to the unlock position for .5 second to begin the programming procedure all the windows begin to open. And then when turning to the unlock position three times the windows move down again. Should this be happening?
