Genepaul Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 Hi all Quick question if anyone knows the answer, the condenser clutch on the air con has gone on my 02 1.9 tdi, there was a horrible vibration noise that I traced the the con clutch, the plate in the middle of the pully was flapping about and has now gone completly this morning! Can the clutch be changed or is it a whole new compressor, and if it can be changed is it a fairly easy job? Thanks Kev Quote
Genepaul Posted September 20, 2008 Author Report Posted September 20, 2008 should have said "Compressor Clutch" :) Quote
gregers Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) yes it can be changed,i had this with mine a few months after i bought it,was told the compressor was kaput so i got hold of another 1 from ebay, luckily when my m8(rip)done a service he found the old clutch sitting on the under tray,it had come off and was completely smooth on the inside we took the clutch plate off of the new 1 and fixed it on the old compressor, this should work as long as the spindle has all the splines on it,hey presto working air con,it was a bastard of a job you defo need 2 pairs of hands 1 working from underneath the car and the other pair holding the clutch plate with a pair of large grips, this saves you taking the whole thing off the car and needing a regass.its very tight down there. :) i was quoted in the region of Edited September 20, 2008 by gregers Quote
Genepaul Posted September 21, 2008 Author Report Posted September 21, 2008 Thanks for that, so what exactly do you have to do, the top plate disapeared down the road yesterday morning, do you have to take the pully off or is it just the inners, there must be more to getting the old bits out than the aparent single nut on the spindle? Thanks Kevin Quote
MrT Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 You need to check that the compressor has not seized as it is often a seized compressor that causes the clutch failure. When my clutch failed, Ford were quoting around the same cost for a new clutch as for a re-manufactured compressor. Depending on the compressor and clutch, setting up a clutch can be tricky using spacers to get the correct clearance. I went for the compressor change in the end. Quote
gregers Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 i got another compressor from ebay and just took off what was on it and put the bits on the one that was still on the car,im sure if (when engines on)you turn the air con on you will see whether the compressor is seized or not iirc the spindle moves back.if it is seized it could be a poor christmas for you, especially if you go down the dealer route. Genepaul Posted September 22, 2008 Author Report Posted September 22, 2008 (edited) Cheers both, certain that the compressor is not seized as I can turn the middle spindle by hand very easily, recon I am now on a quest to find a reasonably priced second hand unit that I can take to bits. Thanks Kevin Edited September 22, 2008 by Genepaul Quote
gregers Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 iirc they all look pretty similar,i know there's a bunch of codes on them, but if your only after the clutch plate then pay a visit to your local breakers, even if the compressors u.s the plate may be ok. Quote
Genepaul Posted September 23, 2008 Author Report Posted September 23, 2008 That's exactly what I am in the process of doing, did phone Fruad to see if you can buy it and they only supply the whole clutch assembly at a mind blowing Quote

Got a second hand clutch assembly today (big thanks to Willie Krashitt) and took off the clutch plate and fitted it into the void on my clutch, 1/2hr of fiddling in the small gap with a socket and wrench, ripped hands and arms and I now have Air Con back. Thanks to all who helped and adviced. Kevin Quote
gregers Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 excellent result, that saved you a few hard earned dollars. Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 Kev, Good to hear that the clutch was OK and it all works without having to fit a new compressor like I did, and that I'm glad I didn't just take all the old bits straight down the scrappy after I'd finished repairing mine. George. Quote
NikpV Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 umm clutch plate fell off - splines are still on the shaft and shaft turns smoothly. Hey gregers sounds like you describe - anybody tell me what the inner comprises is it just a spring and plate or other bits - I'm looks to pick up a working compressor + clutch Quote
gregers Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 nik take your under tray cover off, mine was found sitting on it,me thinks this is a inherent problem with the compressors, hopefully all youve got to do is the simple fix that alot of us have managed to do,fingers crossed it isnt totally u.s. iirc all it is is a plate that slides on the spline on the compressor,(did you have any noise comming from it???)if not YOU MIGHT BE LUCKEY in the fact that it might of just come off?and not elongated the plate(which mine had)my mechanic also put the newone on with lock tight just to make sure it stayed secure, just remember there isnt much room. NikpV Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 Well that was fun ... not .. removal and replacement of undertray is not easy in the dark and cold without lifting the car. Clutch plate recovered ... techically its fcuked no splines left on 90% of it :P so now do I buy a Quote
mikej Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 For what its worth i have a sanden SD7V16 compressor here , part number 7M5 820 803 A / 2M2H 19D629 AA that maybe the same as yours i bought it last year for mine only to find i bought the wrong one ! if interested give me a shoutmike... :P Quote
gregers Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 nik sounds exactly like mine,i think the plate is a lot softer material then the splined rod?iirc because the clutch is not engaged it will continue to spin when you try to tighten up the nut,i suggest you get a m8 to give you a hand 1 from underneath and 1 from the top,my m8 was working the socket while i was holding the clutch plate with a pair of bloody big grips,it is a pain in the arse but saves spending a chunk of dough in removing it.
