Wrong Oil

Much is said about using the correct oil in the 115 hp PD diesel engine i.e. PD oil to VW spec 505.01 (hope I got that right) but what happens, what are the symptoms, of using "ordinary" 10W/40 or 15W/40 reasonable quality diesel oil for 2 - 3 years in the Gal.

Symptoms are camlobe and cam follower wear leading to a noisier top end, if you inspect it visually you'll see a lot of scoring on these surfaces and on the rollers fitted to the PD rocker arms.

 

If the components have not yet failed then renewing the cam and followers as a set will remedy this.
