Dear All,

We have a 99V TDi 110, owners for the last 4 weeks, 28k recorded. Has anyone got any experience with an intermittent and unpredictable 'Grrraunch' noise on turning right at very low speed, or at rest? Not surprisingly, the garage were unable to re-create this noise.

Feel free to make the most expensive suggestions, it's still got a dealer warranty, for what that's worth.

Thanks,

John

I have a 2000 2.3 Zetec and have just noticed that the steering starts grraunch when I turn right as yours appear to be doing. I have booked into Ford dealer on Wed. Lets see if thay can find the fault.

I have a problem with my steering when the car was 21/2 years old. my dealer could not find the fault. when the car was sitting at idle about 800rpm the steering collum would give a very slight vibration and there was a corresponding faint hum that match both would dispear once the rpm ws lifted above 1000rpm, the dealer replaced both rack and pump under warranty however still doing this just not as bad as was ;)

I have a 2000 W Zetec (Old Shape) TDI 110.

The steering on mine also makes a strange noise when turning right.

I have also found that it seems worse if I happen to slip the clutch when emerging from a side road etc.

However it only seems to occur when the car has just been started and the engine is cold. Once the engine is warm it stops.

I thought it may have been a CV joint, but as it seems to stop it must be something else.

Does yours act in a similar manner??

Exactly the same symptoms on our '96 2.0 Ghia - cold engine, low speed, right hand turn and then a growling rumble from under the bonnet - steering wheel can be felt vibrating.

Anyone with a similar problem had this diagnosed?

same with my 97 2.3 GLX. As suggested earlier this must be a slipping belt. With low rev the steering unit asks a lot of power, with causes a slipping belt.

Can this belt put tighter?

Similar on my 99 Galaxy except also does it turning left. Has been to garage, no fault found. However my own investigation shows that the bracket on the clutch pedal actually touches the steering column near the universal joint in the drivers foot well. If you don't press the clutch too far it doesn't touch and so no vibration. Wonder tho' if there should be some sort of guard on the bottom of the steering column - or some sort of stop on the clutch pedal that has come loose/is missing!

Back to garage on Wednesday - will report back

Hi

Took my 2.3 zetec into Ford garage and they investigated the grraunch noise when I turn right. They found the top suspension joint/bush was worn on the drivers side and they replaced it under warranty. They said that they have never had one go before, I have been driving it around and the noise has completey gone. Lets hope it stays that way.

I will go back to the Ford dealer and find out the exact parts replaced if this will help as I am a bit vague on the description.

Reporting back as promised

Been to garage again, this time they have 'adjusted something and replaced a cable' - sorry no further details, only saw the receptionist when collecting.

However the problem is still there but no where near as bad.

Ian, if you can find what was done to your vehicle, I'd be obliged. I will then take my Galaxy to another garage (known for good work) and see what they can find!

If the noise occurs when stationary and truning the wheel, it is unlikely to be the suspension mounts. Running out of other things to consider, though...

Hi All

I have been on to my dealer and he explanined that he had changed the offside shock asborber top mount and bearings. He has given me the parts numbers that he used:

1102592 Bearing

1102593 Spring

7201533 Nut

7201848 Bearing.

I hope this will help. The Ford Dealer was J R Fords of Shefford Herts.

Ian
