Hi Everyone,

 

I am new here so be nice :)

 

I have been looking in my Haynes manual to adjust my handbrake as it could do with just a little tightening.

 

It says the following:

 

1) Fully release the handbrake then apply the footbrake firmly several times to ensure that the self-adjustment mechanism is fully adjusted. (no problems with this bit of course)

 

2) Lift the handbrake lever gaiter from the floor to gain access to the adjuster nut on the side of the lever (no problems with this bit)

 

3) From the fully released position, pull the handbrake lever up noting the number of clicks emitted from the handbrake lever on the sixth notch of the mechanism then slacken the adjusting nut until it rotates freely.

 

This part i understand aswell

 

but then it says:

 

Adjust the handbrake by tightening the adjuster nut to 4.0Nm then refit the gaiter.

 

I am a novice with cars but i have had a look and is easy peasy but i dont understand the bit when it says "Adjust the handbrake by tightening the adjuster nut to 4.0Nm" what is 4.0Nm? and how do i know when i have adjusted to 4.0Nm?

4.0 Nm is a torque - a rotational force of 4 newtons at one metre or in old fashioned units of approx 3 lb-ft

 

Use a torque wrench if you want to acheive this figure accurately

 

or

 

Finger tight is about 2 Nm so 4 Nm will be a small spanner with a light touch..........

Basically its just finger tight and a little bit more (with a spanner) - take up the slack.....
