cantona1 Posted August 31, 2008 Report Posted August 31, 2008 Just got back from a week in yorkshire ,our first long journey since buying our 1.9TDI GhiaX, Auto, 1999, 3 weeks ago ,the car went really well but a couple of issuses came up while we were there .NO. 1, The 2 fans at the front on the rad start up as soon as the the engine is fired up from cold and they come on for about 3 seconds and go off again then back on again its almost like stop/start stop/start and this happens all the time from cold ,any thoughts ?NO.2,The temp gauge went really high, over the 3/4 mark after going up some very steep hills ,it never boiled up ,but got very hot then went back slowly .Iam just trying to get used to what these cars should and should not do as I have not had to much experience with the general running of the Galaxy any help would be much appreciated . We also got 41 mpg while doing the long runs and we only used 1/4 of a tank of fuel getting from Thirsk to Buckinghamshire Quote
seatkid Posted August 31, 2008 Report Posted August 31, 2008 Problem No.2 is probably a consequence of Problem No.1. I would say you have a problem with the fan thermostat switch. Quote
projektzwo Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 i would think that your temp going up to 3/4 wasnt goodyour fans should have kicked in prior to going that highon my alhambra it dosnt go much off the half before coming back down and thats in heavy nose to nose trafficdef get them checked out Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 Both fans come on if the Air con is activated - Try turning off the air con and see what happens. There may be an issue elsewhere. Quote
Beyond Help? Posted September 3, 2008 Report Posted September 3, 2008 I concur Bigjeeze, they do come on with the aircon. And it is a handy thing to remember if your overheating and the thermostatic fan switch is playing up! So check the correct function of the fans. If they are fine then consider a stuck thermostat or the thermostat failing to fully open. It is easy to remove and test on your engine. Also be aware that sometimes the impeller can fall off the water pump and give the same overheating symptoms. As the water pump is a bit of a pig of a job if you then find that it was not the problem after you have changed it then bear in mind that unfortunately overheating under high load, for example when climbing a hill, can also be a symptom of a head gasket failure. So have a Block Combustion Gas test done. It should only cost about Quote
