the access point for this is in front of your wheel.Turn your wheel fully to the left, and find the hatch,which is like a sliding door - slides upwards. but dont even think about trying it yourself if you aint got girlie size hands!

 

assuming you have small hands,open the hatch and locate the sidelight "base",twist it to the left while pulling on it.when you have it out pull the bulb from its base and fit a new one in reverse order.......I suggest you view a picture of it in your manual first to correctly identify it

...and just how much force do you have to use to get the cover to slide open?

No bulbs gone, but I thought I'd try mine when I got it, and couldn't shift the things (both sides tried) without fear of breaking them!

Have you got hid's? if so its a total light unit removal job in order to change the bulbs! which could be why they say refer to the dealer!

I managed to change the same bulb a while ago, the space is tight (medium sized hands) even the wife tried but eventually IIRC I used a pair of snipe nosed pliers to hold the bulb holder, took a bit of fiddling.

Brake fluid change is soooo easy compared to a Zafira - visit your local Vauxhall dealer and be amazed at just how close to the overhanging bulkhead the filler cap is!

Oh, and Galaxy is brilliantly designed - just how VW and Ford managed to squeeze everything under the short bonnet is a near miracle.

It's just not designed to be maintained! But this is the price you pay for having such a large percentage of the car available for the cabin.

Me thinks the only solution is take out an extended warranty after 3 years, but this will then tie me to the dealers

 

Any Idea what Ford/Seat/Vw charge for an extended warranty - given that they have just put in a new autobox (which they reckon was the best part of 2k fitted) ??

I totally agree, it's a superb design, but surely it must also be maintainable - If it is difficult, then dealers will charge the earth and are less likely to carry out the work. How can I trust a dealer to change the Cambelt when I can even see where it might be. In addition, european Police tend to give people the opportunity to change blown bulbs instead of imposing a fine - hence why they have to carry bulb kits - I'm sure the friendly Gendarme will wait whilst I take the engine out.

 

With regard to Vauxhalls Zafira's, my experience of them makes our beloved cars seem very reliable.

it may be an easier option to remove the whole headlamp to get at the bulbs! its only four screws and a couple of multi plugs, it looks like the headlight wouldnt need adjusting afterwards as the adjusters are part of the light unit!

Italiastar - I have the same issue with warranty as mine is now just outside of the 3-year cover. It';s a question of luck, I suppose. You may have a "good-un" and end up paying over the odds for full dealer servicing. If you have a problematic example, you will probably know by now, and will be able to make a considered judgement on the need to pay for extra cover.

You could also consider, for example, Warranty Direct or equivalent who may not require you to have main dealers perform the servicing.

You then have to balance the cost of all thois "peace of mind" with any excess payable under a policy, and the cost of anything that does go wrong.

So far I haven't bought any extra cover (but I do have my fingers crossed that the aircon doesn't pack up again - I intend to have it recharged or refilled every 2 years).

I wonder why they changed the headlight design for the mark2 so radically.

 

Bulb changing on a Mk1 is easy, even compared to my mother-in-laws '96 fiesta!!

I just tried to open the flap on my mates MK2 Galaxy, i think it would easier to remove the headlight unit and change the bulb that way! apart from nearly rippng out the wheel arch liner and skining my knuckles in the process of trying to open it! the flap refused to budge <_<

I have HID's on my Galaxy. They are easy to take out and replace providing that you have the correct tools. ie. a long TORX driver with at least a 20cm long shaft.

I had to switch the beam down to level as i live on the continent and managed to have both units in and out in 45 minutes.

 

I will be happy to take one out in the near future and post some pics of how its done.

Managed to get bulb out last night, top of my left hand's a bit scratched.

Had a look at indicator one too out of curiosity.

Took ages to get back in. Ouch. A bigger hole would be a good idea.

:huh:The mk2 lights are definitley much more fiddley than yours SEATKID, but they also provide a much better path of light.

 

whereas the mk1 had to get both the dipped and main beam to operate reasonably well from a single bulb,and direct the light path through glass deflector "lenses" - dont know the tek name),The mk2 lights are each optimised to their specific application,without compromise to suit the other,thanks to their individual reflectors.

 

:P of couse if you rarely travel at night you wont benefit much from the difference :P
