Hi All,

I need to replace my standard 16" alloys as the lacquer is all but shot, and the tyres are all down to minimum tread depth.

I want to replace them with the RS6 style alloys that seems to be a favourite for obvious reasons, but am unsure wether to go for 17" or 18".

The 17 requires a 45 profile tyre and the 18's a 40, strangely the 18's are a fair bit cheaper?

Could anyone who has doen this already give me some good advice as my wife never stopped complaining about the harshness of our last car which had very low profile tyres on.

Many Thanks.

...ask a silly question:

The 17's will be a noticeably harsher ride than the 16's.

What do YOU want to do? (I know, you want to pretend your lorry is a sports car and that you're not getting any older.)

I would simply replace the 16's with a nicer set of 16's and continue to use the correctly load rated 16 inch tyres which are widely available.

lol, just wondered how noticeable the difference is as if only very slight then I would go for the 18's as they are cheaper and 16" tyres always seem to be the most expensive.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for that,

I think I will go for the 17's as they are the nicest looking alloys I have seen on a galaxy and there are plenty of 17's around so tyres will be good prices as you mentioned.

Ps. If you have any pics I would be most interested to see exactly what size the 17's look on the gal.

Thanks Again

If you change your mind and end up going for the 18" you will have to go for 235 (not 225) width to get the extra load rating but still a 40 prfile. Loads of Gals etc are running around with the 225 tryes but thay are only rated at about 92 ish and you need 95 on a Gal. Theres a chance the insurance would be unhappy if something went wrong.

I have the 18" RS6 alloys, and to be honest I have noticed very little difference in the ride quality, not a lot harsher, but the handling is noticeably better. The only way you would really harshly affect the ride quality is by replacing springs with lower ones.
