faz Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 About a month ago my company fitted a speed limiter onto my works van, set at 70mph, in an attempt to save costs (as I do a high mileage last month 6000 miles), I have found it to be dangerous and stressful. Before the limiter was fitted I averaged about 600 miles per tank, since the limiter has been fitted i'm averaging about 550 miles per tank, I put this increase in consumpsion down to the fact that I can no longer keep to a steady speed, as I keep on getting stuck behind lorries. I fought long and hard to try to stop this limiter being fitted, but to no avail. Speed limiters should be a concern to all drivers because it is expected that all vehicles will be fitted with them within ten years, apparently the technology alredy exists through the GPS system to limit your speed to the speed limit of the road that you are driving on. mk2vr6 Posted August 10, 2008 Report Posted August 10, 2008 we now have gps trackers in all our vans  they know where we are 24/7 and can pull up the data on what times we start the vehicle, sit idling or stop in traffic and our average and max speed for any given time! but its not to catch us out or to be used to monitor our working practices but it's to be used as an aid to help us work more efficiently and help the management plan our work load better if the van is moved outside of working hours rumour has they get an email informing them of this! so I move my van at least 10 times over the week ends just up and down the road  well it has to be moved as the hose wont reach the far side when I wash it and the amount of big delivery trucks that need to squeeze past at week ends...well thats my excuse ;) Quote
Animal169 Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 Well, I've used them on BIG vehicles, they can be good, it allows you to keep your foot flat on the floor and know you're not going to get a ticket! If everyone has to have them fitted, then people will all get used to them and there'll be no problems, it'll also be a good reason to start a load of new threads as people find ways to bypass them!! The only issue is other road users , if people remember how to use the road properly, especially motorways, we'd all get around faster, I drive my Gal everywhere for work, every time I use a motorway, i see 2 main types of people, middle lane hogs (scared thay might have to change lanes, I even see some sitting in the middle when there's nothing else around them!!), and the 'fast' lane hogs (they seem to think they'll get there faster if they sit up the backside of the car in front). Personally I'm looking forward to fitting CC as I can get an extra 100m to the tank if I sit at 70, I'll probably keep my license longer as well. Quote
Biscuit Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 I have a limiter fitted on my wagon at work as well as a tracker!!!I think that people have become more tolerant of the speed waggons can/can go. Quote
seatkid Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 I would welcome a system that gives an audible warning when you go over the speed limit that applies at the time. This would keep me from inadvertantly speeding and risking a ticket but leave me with the flexibility to allow a temporary transgression if the situation warranted it. A "hard" limit of 75mph or 80mph should be applied to all vehicles for safety reasons. Quote
faz Posted August 11, 2008 Author Report Posted August 11, 2008 I'm finding that my fuel consumption has increased, before the limiter was fitted I tried to keep as close to 70mph as possible, excelerating slightly when overtaking then returning to 70mph, with a limiter fitted you are constantly having to slow down, due to the fact that the vehicles in the middle lane are driving about 80mph without leaving a big enough gap to safely pull into. In light motorway traffic I must admit it is a bonus not to keep checking your speed, but light motorway traffic nowadays is getting very rare. Quote

A "hard" limit of 75mph or 80mph should be applied to all vehicles for safety reasons. My Tom Tom does this. It tells you what the current road speed limit is and then "bongs" if you go over the speed limt. It doesn't work on some B roads but all Motorways and A roads. I use this in conjunction with my Cruise control to keep the right side of the law. Quote

mk2vr6 Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 (edited) this feature is found in the safety preferences screen warn when driving faster than allowed warn when driving faster than a set speed on ticking these boxes you will be asked to pick a warning sound and a speed, depending on your model you can either down load a suitable warning or record your own!
