brownie Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 (edited) I was on my way to work on wednesday morning (5am) when the 'charge' light came on, "oh damn and blast!", I thought. Stopped to check, the belt was still running so must be the alternator. The history of the old Gal we have, is that it has done 180,000 miles, is a 'bit' bashed, and the alternator that was on there had the old 'box of budgies' rattle since we got it. Popped into Partco and collected a new alternator, fitted it in 1 1/2 hours, like a new motor!! You wouldn't believe how quiet it is! For an old engine with 180,000 miles, it sounds like new! I checked the old pulley (clutch type) when I removed the alternator and it was seized solid on the alternator shaft, the new one worked as it should. No wonder it was chirping. Replacing an alternator on a MKI diesel (110) is a piece of cake, as long as you remove the airbox, engine cover, etc (don't forget to disconnect the battery!!!) One online company I checked prices and availablity with said they supplied new alternators but with 'solid' pulleys, due to the failure rate of the clutch type. Sounds great but saves them Edited August 8, 2008 by brownie Quote
