Hello everyone

Any advice or ideas on this would be great.

perhaps you could describe the noise, "a little noise" is not very helpful

Sorry, the noise happens when i'm lifting my foot off clutch and it only happens in fifth gear, it's a sort of whirring noise, thats the only way i can describe just now but will listen better when driving it later.

Well thats me just back from town and no noise there on the way in and only very slighly on way home not half as bad as yesterday, only way to describe it really is as the noise you get when in too high a gear when slowing down and you get that whiney noise.

Possibly clutch release bearing a little noisy. Not worth doing anything about unless it develops into a loud noise - which may never happen.

Just spoke to mechanic at local garage explained to him what was happening he said it was probally bearing on gear rod for fifth and sixth gear and basically gearbox on way out, to be honest totally way over my head havent got a clue what he was on about could you guys help out please.

I'm not an expert on these gearboxes but have done a few on Sierras. One way of checking the clutch release bearing or the thrust bearing, as suggested by Seatkid, is to leave the car in neutral with the engine running and dip the clutch. If you stand outside the car with the bonnet open and listen around the clutch area you'll normally hear the bearing "whirring" and if the noise goes whilst someone else dips the clutch then thats a dry clutch release bearing. So it only whines when coasting in 5th? ..... What about 6th? If it's just 5th then its probably the 5th gear that's worn. When was the last time the gear box oil was changed?

To be honest i dont know as i only just got the car about 6 weeks ago, there doesnt seem to be any noise when clutch is dipped when in nuetrel, the noise comes and goes and only in fifth gear, it will run fine for days then the noise appears and will be like that for few days then goes away again, got me a bit worried what with the mechanic saying gearbox could be on way out, its only done 82'000miles or so the clock says.

Nah ....... If the other gears are OK then I wouldn't worry too much. I would certainly change the gearbox oil for piece of mind and keep an ear out to see if it gets worse.
