Hi

I seem to be doing a lot of miles in my 54 Gal diesel at the moment (only 60k now but going up like a rocket) and I am wondering how many miles I will be able to get out of it before I have to change it?

The most I have ever got out of a diesel is 130k from a peugeot but that had to go because the electronics were unreliable rather than the engine.

Cheers

When I was searching for one I asked myself the same thing, did an ebay search of the cheapest Mk2 diesels that had completed and then looked at all of the mileages they had. The majority had between 100 and 150K on them (and still working) but I saw one at 174, one at 210 and one at 305K!!!!! The vw diesel is renowned for being pretty reliable IF well maintained - I think the rest of the car will disintigrate well before a well maintained derv engine.

I agree with the other posts

Its the rest of the car that falls apart before the engine does

Old favourites like clutch, master cylinder, Air Con, drive shafts, gear selectors, water pump, cam belt, all combine to make the cost of keeping the car very high, when you get past about 80k miles

If Ford/VW/SEAT (whichever version you own) could have made the whole vehicle reliable then keeping it up to 150k to 200k miles would have represented great VFM

I was in a Skoda Octavia TDI Taxi in Athens the other week, the guy had almost 600,000 km on the clock. I chatted with the driver and he confirmed that it was still the first engine, however the second gearbox. That should give you an idea

1999 90bhp tdi i'm at 96k miles (with a tuning box :) ), the engine is still sweet, the wiring in the door joins / hatch is going brittle and breaking, i have rust in the tailgate, and it's looking tired, air con is not working.

cant face replacing it till it's completely shot as it still does the job - tows caravan, 350m round trips weekly, round town etc - still returns 35-40mpg...

I serviced a VW van the other week with an AFN in it. It was the 410,000 mile service! Original engine, but he gets through a clutch every 120,000 miles or so and he needed a new flywheel on his third clutch!

The van was a bit tatty inside though, but outside was very clean and shiny, it was on an S plate if I recall correctly.

Hi

Our Sharan did 180,000 before we sold it, of our two Galaxies, one is on 60K [still a baby] and the other is 30K.

What is important, as others earlier in the thread have said, is to correctly maintain the engine, oil-belts-etc. We have a Galaxy in work which is on 350K and it looks like new, well almost.

Regards

Mine's at 82k and I'm just getting that feeling that it's beginning to fall to bits - I'm a bit tired of seemingly continually fixing it.

My MK1 has 138K on the clock and my MK2 has 139K - both still in daily use both orignal clutches. I have had a few problems but I fully intend to keep my MK2 going until it literally isn't worth carrying on - I am expecting to at least 250K with it before I change.

03 plate Galaxy. 80k miles. All the following had to be fixed in the last three months but before this NP:

CV joint replacement (and as a result driveshaft cos I left the repair too long ^^)

Booster/auxilary heater replacement

Front/rear discs/pads (serviceable I know but just to give an idea)

Power steering belt tensioner

O/S headlight leveller motor

Exaust from (but not including) cat to box

Enigine is still fine, clutch is good, gearbox is getting a little 'lumpy'. No corrosion at all anywhere yet. All electronics work fine.

as long as you have regular services or atleast oil and filter replacement regularly it will last for well over 200000miles, i change oil and filter on my diesel van "51 Plate" every 6 months and full service yearly, its done 215000 miles doesnt smoke at all and starts on the button, you cant change the oil and filter enough on a diesel, hope this helps
