Hope someone could answer this one quickly please.

My brother has a problem 200 miles from home.

Its a 98 Galaxy 1.9 TDI 115bhp

He has a problem with the gearchange.

He describes it as not being able to engage 1st and second gears.

When he moves the lever to that position he gets 3rd and 4th instead.

He says he has some extra slop in the lever in a sideways direction but ne excessive play in a forward backwards direction.

Any one got an idea?

Thanks.

Steve.

Yup thats linkage failure, there are two - one for horizontal and one for verticle. Sounds like the horizontal one has popped off the box hence it cant move out of 3rd and 4th - He might be able to resecure it for the journey home.

From above, but not at all easy with the battery and tray in situ

Thanks again, I will ring him and tell him.

He is in Green Flag but is worried he will get taken to the cleaners by the garage they take him to.

Perhaps he can have a go himself, he has managed to get to the campsite he is staying at,

He has tools.

I seem to remember reading on here that the battery tray is what holds the gearbox in place tho so he won't be able to remove it to get access.

Is that right folks? Not sure if it's only certain models....?

Might be worth a heads up

its accesible but a tight squeese battery tray is in the way but its not impossible .....just need to take the 2 intercooler pipes off to get at it

where is he saying ?? maybe 1 of us is close and could help him out

He is near Hetton-Le -Hole, Durham way.

Steve,

the cable will have came off at the gearbox end, one for forward back, the other for left to right, it is a ball and socket arrangment, the socket is worn,

easy to fix tho, around the sides of the ball is a metal shield, drill a small hole in either side, put the socket back in to place, then put a piece of piano wire or a split pin accross the top of the ball joint and in to the two holes,
