Guest fredt Posted September 29, 2004 Report Posted September 29, 2004 I will be going over Friday PM. I was in there today, didnt see any cruise control stalks but I wasnt really looking! saw a couple of audio control stalks, and an Alhambra taxi cab complete with radio's and snap shot camera :D unfortuanatly they want silly money for some of the parts! and they dont look after the parts they have that need protection from the elements! there are door cards and decent seats covered in oil and coolant from where the have stashed engines and gearboxes inside the vehicles :D but they are local and I can usually knock the prices down with a bit of banter with the guy so I cant complain to much  Quote
Guest gritrash Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 You don't need to touch the airbag or dismantle the wheel. You just take the top half of the steering column cover. 2 screws in the top. Once you have done that you remove the old stalk assembly and fit the cruise control one, the wires should already be there.i am now begining to feel really stupid  have removed top half of the steering column cover (2 screws from underneath), but then the indicator assembly appears to be a unit that extends right around the steering column. Am i missing something really obvious here?2003 tdi galaxyany help gratefully received Quote
Guest fredt Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 as far as I can see its horse shoe shaped and slips over the steering column, although it is bolted/screwed into place by a fixing on the top side of the switch cluster, it could be that with the lower column shroud still in place it gives the impression of being a fully wrap around unit? Guest spanner137 Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 this is what your looking for Quote
Guest gritrash Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 this is what your looking for ...but the unit for my model looks more like this  Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 I think the reason for the difference is that yours is a MK2 and Spanner has shown a MK1 control stalk! Quote
Guest gritrash Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 OK, are we moving towards establishing that mk1 indicator/cruise stalks can be swapped with the steering wheeel in situ, whilst the steering wheel has to come out for mk 2's? :D If so, any advice from anyone on removing the steering wheel (on a mk2) - particularly as the TIS shows the use of a special tool. Anyone know whether any readily availalble implements that will do the same job? Quote
Guest spanner137 Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 By the looks of the mk2 it comes supplied with a wiring loom, so it will not be a straight forward exchange, the mk1 just swaps like for like, cant help sorry but you could email the german supplier as he told me that the fitting instructions for the mk 1 were in german only up to 2000 good luck Quote
Guest rith62 Posted October 2, 2004 Report Posted October 2, 2004 Hello gritrash, Sorry for my english but I speek french (live in french part of Switzerland). I just finished this afternoon to install on my TDI 1.9 year 2001 the same Cruise Control you have, exept that I do not have to connectors as I can see on your picture. I do'nt know if it works as I havn't activated it. I may go on Monday to a VW dealer to see if he can activate it and also to reset some error codes do to the fact that the batterie has been disconnected.Anyway the car is working as before the cruise control. I am glad because as you I was a bit nervous about working around the airbag. I will see if an error code will come out on the airbag too. But at least the airbag-light on the main board works as it should. Once You have taken appart the airbag unit, normaly You need a special tool with 12 teeth (Looks like Torx but has 12 instead as 6 teeth (You can see the nut on page 7 of the pdf document in the link below) to unscrew the nut that holds the steering wheel . I did it with a Torx T55 (Just remember that you will need to screw the nut back with a force of 60 Nm. For me the trickiest part was to fit the bloody cable going to the fuse-box into place. Took me 5 hours to find a solution to put it in the slot 1. I was unable to take appart the fuse box so I had to work a bit like a blind man as the cable has to fit into the back of the box. In the pdf document he is simply soldering the cable to an existant cable installed in the fuse-box. I would have done that after 5 hours an 10 minutes. Her is the link to the german site with a pdf document and some good pictures.Hope it will help You. Or is allready everything done, and you cruise(-control) arround! http://www.v2a-schutzbleche.rueenaufer.de/...bau_MJ2000_.pdf Greetings from Switzerland Quote
Guest gritrash Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 rith62 - thanks for the information Quote
Guest gritrash Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 this may help: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/control_stalk.htmi have not used it, so cannot vouch for it's accuracy Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Gritrash - did you get it all sorted in the end?? Mike Quote
Guest gritrash Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 no, still plucking up the courage to mess with the airbag Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 The airbag was probably the easiest part!!! Just disconnect the Neg lead from the battery, and use a 6" screwdriver to lever the clips one at a time - comes off really easy! Mike PS the steering wheel need NO special tools, just the correct size bit and some threadlock for when you put it back on! Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 The airbag was probably the easiest part!!! Just disconnect the Neg lead from the battery, and use a 6" screwdriver to lever the clips one at a time - comes off really easy! As long as the airbag is connected back up correct before the battery is re-connected all should be fine. If the battery is re-connected before the bag is fitted back and plugged back in the airbag warning light will show and a trip to the dealers to get it reset will be required. Quote
