nickcockman Posted July 13, 2008 Report Posted July 13, 2008 Hi again :) I am trying to get my cruise control working. There is no light for the CC (not sure if there should be or not) and it don't work :) So trying to diagnose and sort it out. So far I have tested the clutch switch and brake switch which I managed to unscrew by putting my hand up on top of the pedal and disconnect: Brake switch - one switch found and it has four connectors 1-4. With 'plunger' out I think the switch is off. When I push the plunger in (this will happen when the brake pedal is up with no pressure on it) I only get some continuity across pins 1 to 4. Is this correct? I expected to find two switches, something like 1-2 for the brake light circuit and 3-4 for the CC. Would anyone be able to tell me the pinnout for the switch please? Do you think the switch is broken? Clutch switch - one switch found and it has two connectors. With 'plunger' out I think the switch is off. When I push the plunger in (clutch resting) I get continuity - so all is cool with that. ... But, there is slight play in the clutch and it would appear that when the clutch is at rest, the plunger is out - which would indicate to the control circuit that the clutch has been pressed! Haven't properly tested this, but am 95% sure this is happening. Query about the clutch switch. Above the clutch there are two holes to plug switches in. The switch I have found is in the larger hole to the right. The plunger operates against some metal on the clutch pedal lever. The hole on the left is slightly smaller (nothing was in it) and it has a 'pad' for the plunger (if there was one) to sit nicely on. Do you think someone has put the wrong clutch switch in the car? A smaller clutch switch in the left hand hole would work much better as it has a good seat for the plunger to rest on. So, in summary, I'm not sure if my brake switch is all present and correct. Also, I think the clutch switch is the wrong one in the wrong place and that could be the cause of my problems. Sorry for the long post :) Would welcome any comments on this. Also, whilst I'm here, can VAG-COM allow you to check all the switches for the cruise control? Not that I have it yet :) Thanks all!Nick Quote
nickcockman Posted July 14, 2008 Author Report Posted July 14, 2008 thinking about it, I think the switches operated the other way round (possibly). Plunger in, pedal at rest, no continuity. Plunger out, pedal operated, no continuity. Not that it makes much difference to my problem though :) Quote
nickcockman Posted July 14, 2008 Author Report Posted July 14, 2008 has anyone got a mkII ghia with cruise control that could put their hand up on top of the clutch pedal and see if the switch is mounted in the left or right hole? Quote
redhump Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 I don't know if you got this sorted but I am having the same problem. I bought the car about 3 weeks ago and just recently the cruise control stopped working. I traced it to the clutch switch and have found that like you the pedal does not quite make enough contact to operate the switch. If I hold my foot under the pedal and lift it up the cruise works. The switch is fitted in the lower hole but like you say it would be better in the upper hole so it contacts the pad. It does not fit in that hole though as the shape is slightly different. Quote
nickcockman Posted August 28, 2008 Author Report Posted August 28, 2008 I did fix this  By chance :D I was going to add a bit of plastic on the end to make the plunger longer and as I was doing this I found that the plunger is adjustable!! If you lower the clutch a little and then pull the clutch switch plunger out (pull quite hard) it has a ratchet type thing that allows it to adjust. Once the plunger is out as far as it will go, release the clutch lever and it will push the plunger back in and adjust it to the correct place. Hope this helps :lol:Nick Quote
redhump Posted August 29, 2008 Report Posted August 29, 2008 Thanks for that Nick. I have just been to my local Ford dealer to buy a new switch. However they had ordered the wrong one. It seems as though there are indeed two switches on the clutch pedal. One is called the clutch pedal switch and the other is the cruise control switch. Apparently the clutch pedal switch is to tell the ecu when the clutch is engaged or not. I don't see why they can't use one switch for both functions. I am going out to the car in a minute to see if there are two switches or not and I will try your method on the cruise control switch. On the Microcat it looks as if the clutch switch fits further on top of the pedal box and fits in from the opposite side of the pedal. Quote
