mumof4 Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Right guys.I need a step by step guide in simple english in how i can check it, and if needed, how i sort it if loose. Today i lost my power steering 4 times , it was raining hard, no undertray. Normal dry weather, when i use full lock or go round a steep bend, i get like a juddering through the steering wheel. Stationary turning the wheel to full lock with engine on, it judders, and you can see the wheel turning in a not very smooth manner like you would expect.almost like its stilted. So before i fork out on stuff like power steering pump etcc..... id like to check the belt. going round a corner and not expecting to lose power steering, then loseing it is kinda scarey when you have a field full of nice fat juicy lambs coming towards you. with a fence and hedge in the way, it happens split second, after a second or so, it comes back. so, please peeps, in english, explained for the simple minded, how do i check as i cant find my TIS disc. veedyf Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 (edited) its deffo loose .....1. you have an adjuster which is on the pump bracket .....2.somtimes these can wear and not work properly when tightening....3. get underneath slacken the (10 or 13mm bolt slightly....4 get a jack out the boot5.lever the pump as far as you can (with the jack) then tighten the outer bolt again6...should be no juddering now Edited July 11, 2008 by veedyf Quote

MrClarkey Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 I have exactly the same problem. Took mine in yesterday had an engine mounting replaced then I picked it up without the under tray on. This morning (rainining heavily) I was driving it back to the garage for some welding when I lost PS under load (a bit scary!). Did tightening the belt solve your problem? I also have juddering in the dry as you described. Quote

I could ask my mechanic to look at this himself but to be honest money is a little tight and I want to start doing work on my Galaxy for myself. I must admit im a bit shaken at the mo, but thought id better warn those that have the same problem as me.Get the belt sorted ASAP. Ive not long got in after leaving a very long skid going from one side of the road to the other with a few wiggles in it where ive been trying to correct but over correceting as my powere steering kept going on off on off etc.... so when i was useing a lot of force to correct thinking it had gone, i ended up all over the road. I feel lucky that only a few seconds later cars came from the other way as i was on an angle on the wrong side of the road.Anything coming and i would of hit at the time it happened. I was following JB80 when it happened, he turned around and came back. He tightened the belt up with spanners etc on the side of the road. Result is the juddering has gone, but i still drove at a snails pace round corneers just in case. Tomnorrow, one belt will be bought. Mr C, tighten yer belt hun. I dread t think what would of happened if i had of hit cars coming the other way when it went, i was doing 55mph and i had all the kids in the back.Pity i didnt have my camera, quite an impressive skidmark on the road, and you can see where it all went wrong, where i over corrected, and where i ended up. shit, i need a bloody stiff drink. tell yer what, the stench of burning rubber , the smoke from the wheels, it was awful. You'd be no good at a cruise meet then :( Glad you're OK MO4, don't overdo the stiff drink..... :rolleyes: . I agree 100% that driving without an undertray is an accident waiting to happen. The towing eye cover must also be in place! Also any indication of a loose steering belt should be addressed immediately. I only had PS belt slip happen once on a winding back road, raining and muddy. The undertray was on but the towing eye cover was missing! Almost shit myself. The problem is in the 1-2 seconds it takes for you to realise whats happenning, you can easily wrap yourself around a tree..... Its a serious design fault, and one thats probably caused quite a few accidents, with the owners unaware it wasn't their fault! Quote

I'm new to owning my Gal :rolleyes: ..had a mondeo & found forums to be a God send when it comes to fixing common problems with diff models of vechiles...Anyway have read the various replys to the steering pump belt issue & was wondering if there is anyway to make a replacement tray as mine doesnt seem to have one & I dont fancy getting into the same situation if mine went when i've got the family in the car. I'm guessing that there are some fixing points underneath to attach the standard one..might try to make one out of some sheet aluminium as i seem to be missing the rubber diffuser from the bottom of the front bumper aswell. :( Quote
seatkid Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 There are some on this forum that say that only diesel engined Galaxys are affected by this problem, due to the position of the belt/pulleys. I am not so sure myself. Here is a picture of a modified undertray. Its large, 3 dimensional and I think youd have trouble making one in aluminium. Quote
cell Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Lol..I'm still waitin for the picture fairy to bless me with the ability to look at pictures at the mo :( ...I'll just have to put the gal onto ramps & see whats under thr... might only make a tray to cover anything near the belts..wouldn't hurt to have some protection around that area anyway..A friend of mine managed to get a screw in his cambelt on his cossie a few years ago so if i's not a big job it wont hurt..Jst leaves a massive list of other things to fix now :rolleyes: Quote

If you pull it off, theres a towing eye underneath for a tow rope. Often people forget to put the cover back. Water here goes straight onto the PS belt. mine is also missing the valance/skirt, whatever you wanna call it from the front bumper aswell....Spoiler, your aerodynamics will be upset at speed, probably causing the front end to go light at motorway speeds.......could be dangerous. mumof4 Posted July 20, 2008 Author Report Posted July 20, 2008 just checked, no towing eye cover on my car. mk2, the first time it happened to me in my other gal, i tried to get help as you well know, it was only when it did go badly wrong that i was listened to.I was told there was nothing wrong with it by 3 different garages that time.Plus it was a totally different problem. what happened yesterday, hadnt happened before like that, yes it juddered in the dry, and every now and then it would lapse in the wet, but it had never gone whilst in the dry like that. dieselgal Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 If it's a diesel and if it's juddering in the dry when you turn the wheel, especially at idle, it's probably the alternator pulley.
