oily49 Posted July 7, 2008 Report Posted July 7, 2008 I recently had a new clutch fitted by a local garage and ever since have had a problem changing gears. Second gear is by far the worst, almost impossible to engage, while the others are very 'clunky'. The thing that confuses me is that the problem only exists for the first 10-15 minutes of a journey then gradually disappears. Also, when I first got the car back (but doesn't appear to be doing it now), at the start of a journey, if I was in gear with the clutch pedal hard down, the car would creep forward as if the clutch wasn't disengaging the drive cleanly. The car has been back to the garage twice but they cannot find a fault and have assured me there is no problem with the work they carried out on the clutch. They have made "adjustments" and even changed the clutch master cylinder, neither of which fixed the problem. The problem never existed before the clutch was changed and i know I should keep taking it back until they fix it, but I have lost faith in the garage now and don't really want them messing with it any more. Any ideas what the problem may be or advice in general will be greatly appreciated. Quote

Hi I have recently joined the site and read yr comments.I have a 1.9TDi 2004 and have just replaced the flywheel and clutch and have had the same problem as you. when they had the gearbox out the said it was almost knackered so when I went back they said they had warned me. I have since had another opinion and the maechanic said it was a known fault on the 6 speed boxes even though the car has only done 95k. I am now looking for a recon gearbox ( around Quote
tim-spam Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Both of these sound like complete nonsense, but unfortunately typical of an increasing number of spanner monkeys. The 6-speed 'boxes are reliable and durable, and the symptoms described point strongly to a dragging clutch (creeping forwards when the clutch is fully depressed - this simply shouldn't happen!). I would think that they have either fitted non-genuine parts or fitted them badly - have they bled the hydraulics properly? As for saying that the 'box was 'knackered' - how?? Worn bearings, worn sychromesh, jumping out of gear?? If the gearbox runs quietly and the gears select and stay selected, then it's generally safe to say that it's OK. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I's go along with Tim - The clutch is not bled like a standard hydraulic clutch where you basically push out any air but it is done using a vaccum so that it draws in the fluid - It sounds like they haven't done this properly. As for the improvement over time maybe that's to do with the amount of times you depress the pedal effectively pumping the clutch. Quote
