bj2004 Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 that could be a dirty or badly connected fuse Quote
moozer Posted June 18, 2008 Author Report Posted June 18, 2008 that could be a dirty or badly connected fuse Thanks - would the fuse in question be a 25Amp? I don't have an owner's handbook/manual Also, I don't have the cigarette lighter in (missing) and I was wondering if the green light (if it is a light!) around it should be lit when activated (i.e when something is plugged into it) - because nothing is lighting up Quote
moozer Posted June 18, 2008 Author Report Posted June 18, 2008 Just tried my son's Nintendo DS using it's adapter. The adapter LED is illuminated, but no power is being transferred to the DS Tried swapping 25A fuse with others available, but no progress. I have same problem with rear power outlets. I have searched these forums, but no definite answer seems to be available Is there another fuse involved in the circuit? Quote
bj2004 Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 hicant help much mines a diesel so fuses may be different it could easily be at least a A25 fuse does it not say in fuse box ? check blades of fuse for oxidisation once correct fuse found (by checking light on ds adaptor ) check cables to rer of fuse green surround of socket only lights when side lights on i think Quote
moozer Posted June 18, 2008 Author Report Posted June 18, 2008 (edited) I have located the correct fuse (25A) - it's No.7 on the fuse box. I tried other 25A fuses in it but problem remains. Contacts on fuse are clean I can't get far enough around the underneath and back of the fuse panel to properly check cables, but it feels that all are secure. The green light does work - did the side lights test. Edited June 18, 2008 by moozer Quote

I discovered all this when installing a sub -woofer and basically by sticking the keys in the ignition, you bring power on to a limited number of circuits. This is typically VW ish and not key to position 1 like on most other cars. So ...just push the key in the ignition and see what you get. Quote

Hi - nope, afraid not Just tried again with keys in; position 1; position 2 and with car running - still no life in anything other than enough power it seems to light an LED!!!! Any other ideas, guys? Quote
Smilge Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 Ok ... worth a try anyway. With power appearing for a nanosecond this sounds a bit like "capacitorish" and I'm wondering whether there is some sort of noise suppression circuit on the 12V accessory line. Have you actually measured the voltage on each of the sockets? Quote

Any other ideas, guys? Right. have you tried it in the front ciggy lighter? and does the ciggy lighter work ie does it heat up the ciggy lighter? Now if it heats up the ciggy lighter the curcuit is fine. Now try the ciggy lighter in the rear power adapters.Does it work? If so the problem is not with the car but the dvd players 12v adapter, or system. Quote
moozer Posted June 18, 2008 Author Report Posted June 18, 2008 Have you actually measured the voltage on each of the sockets? Just checked now - all 3 power points (Cigarette lighter and 2 rear outputs) all read 12.14Volts Quote

I have no cigarette lighter in the car, so can't test this, however, my post above tells you the voltages I get from each power point. The DVD players have no faults using AC power in the house - work perfectly.Portable battery pack works also, but this is only used to power-up the DVD player itself and not the second monitor Edited June 18, 2008 by moozer Quote
bj2004 Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 hi what i did was fit a second battery behind the rear 12v socket and used a caravan inteligent split charger to charge it then connected the battery to the 12v socket so while car was running it charged the battery but with engine off accessorys ran off battery so didnt flatten car battery a sealed alarm battery will do when engin is running you should get about 14v dont know why yours wont but if you ever get round preston i will have a look for you Quote
moozer Posted June 18, 2008 Author Report Posted June 18, 2008 Update Managed to get a cigarette lighter and tried it in the cigarette lighter socket - it works fine. Can't test it on the rear power outlets as it's too short I tried DVD player in another car - works perfectly So what's wrong? Not much use having 4 kids so I could get a Galaxy so I could use these things!!! Quote
moozer Posted June 19, 2008 Author Report Posted June 19, 2008 if you ever get round preston i will have a look for you I may just take you up on that offer, sir!! My sister-in-law lives in Leyland, so can be done!! Quote
moozer Posted July 21, 2008 Author Report Posted July 21, 2008 I'm still having no luck with this problem. If anyone has any ideas or advice as to where to go to get it sorted (cheaply!!) then please reply. It's now summer holidays for the kids and we want to go on trips and days out, so the DVD working would be a huge help. Thanks Quote
Mirez Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 If you know it works on DC in and you know the outlets are giving 12V DC then you need to be looking at the connector itself - there are some variations in the barrel size of cigarette sockets and where most fit ok some dont make contact correctly. Try a 1-to-3 adaptor on the socket and see if that makes contact correctly. I had the same issue with a GPS unit that worked only when really pushed in hard and held in place - hardwired it in the end Quote

So looks like I'll have to seek an auto electrician or try to hardwire it myself, but considering I have very little electrical experience, I will need assistance with it if anyone is prepared to help or advise me, that would be great.
