could be the sensor that feeds the gauge and the ecu, seems quite a common item that fails and causes many different symtons. there is one with a yellow ring or a green ring around it to identify it. you can get them form most car shops or factors at a much lower price than the dealers. it just pushes into the housing and is held with a circlip type fitting that prises out , if you look at the front of the engine in the middle area there is a fat hose that comes out of the head, the sensor is in there, quite easy to see, pull off the block connector and thats it, i didnt even drain the water , you can do a very quick hand movement and get the new one in and only lose a pint or two of water. also check the expansion tank and the sensor in there for low water Edited by marinabrid

Had a fiat that boiled over once, [stone through the rad] the temp sensor worked fine, but it didn't register the vehicle overheating till it was way too late, don't know why but was told because of where the leak was the sensor would only see a problem late.

Now i assume you know that you have no leak, but check that the water is actually going around the whole system and that you pump and thermostat are fine.

Have you topped her up lately? as an air blockage is also a possible problem,as is the fact that it could just be a electrical clitch.

Did you check the coolant level & the sensor in the lid of the expansion tank ?

well sorted out the glow plug light coming on as i read in previous post is all down to the brake light switch which does seem a little strange but must be on the same circuit

think i will try to fit a new thermal switch or temp sender unit

water is ok when checked and also does not boil as had a trip into brum so only thing i think is a faulty sender
