TeamGreen Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Hi everyone, just had the cambelt changed on my 98 Sharan 110TDI AFN and since then the engine is very hard to start when cold especially in the morning. The glowplug light goes out pretty much straight away as though the engine is warm but takes an absolute age to start and when it does there is a great cloud of smoke so the fuel must be getting through ok. Is there anything that thy might have done to cause this or is it pure coincidence? Prior to going in there were no probs at all. Once the car is running then everything is fine with ecconomy of between 40mpg and 50mpg so it must be ok otherwise. It goes back to them next week but any suggestions / ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am worried that they may hit me with a bill that they might have caused. Cheers. Quote

steve2908 Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 hi.same thing happened to my gal diesel after new fuel pump and cambelt were fitted?i took it back to the garage and the said it was caused by FUEL RUN BACK???anyway the changed the pipes from the pump and injectors and now is all ok?hope this helps? fivenecks Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 just had my cambelt fitted last week and when i got it back it was driviving flat ,no power at all.......rand fords today and spoke to the manager and he said that if it was one tooth out it would not start at all........he thinks its the air flow sensor in my case so he is taking the car back today to have a look........till tell him that it went in ok and come out rubbish and that i was going to recall the money back through the bank until sorted.....lol five Quote
seatkid Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 IIRC the sprockets are not keyed on a Mk1 and the correct procedure is to lock the camshaft and pump sprocket in predetermined precise positions and the top sprocket is removed to change the belt. If they have been sloppy then the timing can be out by any amount even a fraction of a tooth. That is almost certainly what has happened. Quote
