cliffbarrimore Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 HiI have a 51 plate 2.8 ghia galaxy, which is scrubbing the outside of the front tyres, every tyre dealer seems to have confilcting information as to what the tracking toe in/out should be, so I am getting through tyres very quickly, all the joints are in good condition so its not a problem there... anyone have the 'true' toe in/out degrees that need to be set so when I take it in I can ask what they are setting it to, to see if its the same thanks Cliff Quote
snapper Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 The V6 is very front heavy and if you are an enthusiastic driver you will eat the outside edge on front and back. One tyre place recomended keeping the front tyres pumped up to the higher fully loaded presures and even as much as 44psi.I have reduced the excessive wear but eliminated it completely Quote
jkspoff Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Even on the slightly lighter 1.9 diesel engines the recommended pressures are 41 up front, so for the V6 I would have said at least 44psi. Quote
big_kev Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Remember that the tyre pressures marked on the vehicle are the MINIMUM acceptable pressures. If it says 38psi then this is the minimum safe level.....40psi would be better. It is likely you may lose some pressure over time...you won't gain any. Obviously there is an upper limit to how much air you can put in before it affects traction and makes the tyre prone to damage. All the Gals should have at least 40psi in the front wheels and at least the same in the back....more if loaded. Any less than this you be likely to lose control on corners and wear the outside of your tyres. Quote

Many years ago I bought a new Peugeot 405 estate, and I had the same problem, as the two front tyres were bald by 5000 miles I went to the dealers, they checked it out and told me they were up to Peugeot's specification, so stuck with a car with illegal tyres. As the tyres were Mitchlins I contacted them, and a Very nice man came out to see my tyres, he checked out the toe in/out settingsetc and basicly said the settings were wrong (as far as they were concerned) they should be set to Parallel ! so he set it to that ! and fitted two new tyres on the front, and never had a problem again(only flat wear over the with of the tyre some 40K miles later) So as I say you can read this as you like but it worked for me ! Nooooooo!........ They should be toe'd in slightly......unless you really like wandering all over the road. Although admittedly they will last longer if parallel......the rest of the vehicle and the driver may not ! Quote

chromedome Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 :) My Galaxy tracking was set to parallel from new and it was a bit fague on fast bends and tended to follow different contours on the road. My front tyres actually wore on the inside edge. Tracking now set to toe in and tyres wearing evenly. So this appears to follow Big Kevs line of thought. I personally get upset when people start wingeing at one another, after all we are all trying to help and offer advice to each other. If you don't like the advice then don't use it. I'll get off my soap box now. :D Quote
