Guest karlska Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Hi everyone I hope someone can help me here with a pinking problem I've got with my KA.The KA is an early KA P reg 97 (electric windows,PAS).It has done 48K and has been regularly serviced. It has developed a pinking under light or heavy load.As all the usual things that could be attributed to pinking ie,timing, mixture etc are under the control of the Powertrain module and are not adjustable I took it in to the garge to be scanned on their computer.Unfortunately they didn't find any problems with the readout. No error codes were present with the module.I have since checked the spark plugs and they are a perfect colour which indicates correct mixture and a generally good running car so I'm at a loss.At the moment I can only put it down to carbon build up so I've added some Redex to the fuel but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.Has anyone on here had this problem before? If so I'd be extremely grateful for any advice you can offer. Thanks anyone who can help.
seatkid Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 You could try disconnecting battery to reset the PCM (nb radio code will be lost). Pre ignition might be due to carbon build up as you suggest but its only done 48k, check the plugs are the correct type, the heatrange may be wrong. Alternatively you could use super unleaded.
Guest ianock Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Ask your dealer to check it again on the computer & update the PCM to the latest calibration,if this doesn't help(it should!)then you have a sensor fault which the PCM stratergy cannot compensate for, good luck!
Guest manxdavid Posted March 2, 2004 Report Posted March 2, 2004 I had the exact same trouble with mine at approx. the same mileage. Turned out it wasn't pinking at all, it was the timing chain and tensioner worn out! A cheap but fiddly job; can be done with the engine in place tho'..
Guest DervMan Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 It may also be something as silly as the ignition wires, which have a habit of needing replacing at the 40 - 50 K point. Kermit's recently crossed the 40K barrier so I'm expecting to replace these any time soon...
