how come its always the TDI whiners that kick off about the price of fuel? they always start the threads about their high mpg figures but never actually prove them, or shoot each other down about their wildy high claims! and they are the first ones to moan about the lack of BHP and start the threads on chipping yet kick off about the snake oil claims about better mpg that are supposedly available after chipping ........ jeeze! it just goes to prove what a bunch of grumpy old men you actually are.........

Gosh don't you think he is so sexy when he get masterful like that?

Fuel tax consists of two elements.

VAT at 17.5% which obviously increases as the price of oil goes up.

Duty which is a fixed amount and therefore does not increase.

However the government regularly increases duty to keep this as a rough percentage of oil costs.

The recent rapid rise in oil costs means that the overall percentage of tax on fuel has fallen considerably.

Hence Mr Brown will be looking to raise duty asap

He will probably be hung for this......well lets bloody well hope so.

Thanks for the clarification

Driving down to Norwich on Friday (A17) - most garages seem to have settled at 129p/litre.

Today, lots of garages locally hiked diesel again by up to 3p/litre.

Even if crude comes down (as some predict) - I doubt we will see much downward movement in retail price.

It doesn't seem to have made much difference to traffic levels though, I suspect that a lot of people will not change driving habits even if it climbed to

I forgot just how economical the tdi Galaxy was, filled it up a couple of weeks ago, and covered 300 miles on half a tank, driving sensibly, thats fantastic coming from an ST220 !

Last couple of weeks started to think....yeah...this is down to speculators....price of crude is drifting down.....not likely to make much impact on end user price tho....and then I read this morning....

"The US and the four largest economies in Asia are to voice "serious concerns" over "unprecedented" oil prices.

Energy ministers are meeting in Japan a day after a record one-day jump in the crude oil price, to $139 a barrel. "

:19: $139?? WOT!?* :19:

Oh dear........its going to get worse......MUCH WORSE

Sadly I think you are absolutely right - things are not looking good. ;)

With the price of fuel going ballistic and predicted to carry on relentlessly upwards, (150p per litre by the end of the year is predicted) , I decided in my own little way I must do something about it. I have now moved from 53mpgville to 56mpgville. Had a couple of pleasant day trips to 60mpgville - but they won't let me in to stay. :(

In other news, Toyota have agreed to pay 30% more for their steel, platinum is predicted to rise 50% by the end of the year, etc etc etc. Fuel up, Tax up, labour rates rising..... Looks like the days of cheap motors and motoring are now numbered.

Has the west's recent bingeing (through cheap credit and the subsequent credit crunch) and the pathetic response by central banks and governments finally sealed in an inevitable uncontrolled inflationary future for us and our children?

I think so.

As a matter of interest. I have a Peugeot 306 and have managed to add 5 mpg by knocking the gear into neutral and coasting up to traffic lights and roundabouts etc.. Is this possible in the Mk2 galaxy diesel, or does the computer cut the fuel when on the over run?

I wouldn't think it would make any measurable difference to the fuel consumption the fuel supply is driven electronically rather than mechanically it won't see any difference from being in gear or not.

Acceleration especially when pulling away has the biggest hit.

My fuel consumption varies between 44mpg to 55mpg on a 120 mile round trip.

Depending whether I am impatient or not.

The difference is purely down to speed of acceleration, cruising speed is identical in both cases.

Using the cruise control rather than foot to the floor method of resuming speed makes a big difference on mpg.

Just about every modern car with an ECU, and that includes the Galaxy cuts the fuel on "over run". This is determined by the ECU control software, but basically if your engine is spinning above idle speed (950 rpm in Mk1 diesels) and you lift the accelerator, zero fuel is injected. As soon as you put you foot on the accelerator or the revs dip below the idle speed, fuel injection resumes. This happens seamlessly on a stroke by stroke basis, so you will generally will not be aware that this happens.

Depending on circumstances, it may be more economical to "coast" or to use engine braking (i.e. lift off the accelerator and use the fuel cut off).

As a rule of thumb if you have to lose speed and use the footbrake as you approach a junction or roundabout, use engine braking as much as possible (in addition to foot brake), work the gearbox as you approach, you will be using no fuel during this period. On the other hand if you have a long straight run, where the speed loss is over a longish distance (several hundred metres), it may be more economical to coast with the engine idling.

:) I must say that I strongly believe coasting in a modern car is a perfectly safe practice (in most instances), and please don't wind me up by posting "when coasting, you are not in full control of your car", you may not be but I am sure that I am! :)

Come of it !

At your age your not in full control of your bladder....never mind your car... :)

I coast a lot, usually when drifting up to traffic lights on the dual carraigeway, or when my needle is below red and im praying she will get to the petrol station before coughing and spluttering to a stop.

I do use engine braking quite a bit now, i usually knock her into neutral lift my lead foot and depress clutch till im at the speed to knock her into a low gear. and yessssssssssssss my tootsies are at the ready just in case they are needed. :)

when you move in BK?

I used to coast as it definatley made a difference to the stated MPG over just taking my foot off the accelerator. I have since heard that it is illegal to coast with big fines possible so I don't do it anymore just incase. I would still like to though as anything I can do to get a few more MPG is welcome. I don't think it makes driving any more dangerous if done sensibly.
