Some Advice Please

Hi,

 

i have been looking for a second hand tdi galaxy for some time and have had a look at a good few "mobile smoke machines".

 

Seen one that doesnt smoke but when putting it into first gear it sometimes will make a crunch. I was told that this was "expected" for a galaxy with 100,000 miles and that they,sharans and alhambras all do it.

 

I asked the question of this is a sign of a bigger problem such as gearbox or cluthc going but was told (unsurprisingly) that it wasnt.

Was also told that to get round the problem all you need to do is put it into another gear first and then into first and this lines up the gears and stops the crunch.

 

Seeing as how i dont know much about them i thought id ask although it all sounds a bit like a dodgy clutch/gearbox to me.

 

Anyone any thoughts?

Sounds like the syncro is on its way out in first gear.

Ok its not going to pack up over night but gearbox out and strip down to fix and no they dont all do it.

100K is nothing for a Gal Diesel.

Any idea of how long it would last or is it how long is a piece of string kind of thing?

Theres no reason why it wont last a long time but i dont think id buy a car with a slow syncro unless the price was right cos its gonna have to be done at some point.

Lets be honest.......you don't really need 1st gear in a Tdi.

 

However if the sychro has gone .....where did all the bits go ?

You made the right choice.

The market is loaded with secong hand TDIs so you should find one soon.

Try auctions, lowish mileage Gals are there and you can check gearbox etc before bidding.
