Starting on my 1998 110bhp Galaxy has become very laboured to the point where I'm wondering if it is going to start at all.New glow plugs made no difference and the problem has got progressively worse.Its not climate or temperature related. I've had the car since new so I know I haven't bought a problem. It's got 49k on the clock. Is this part of its inexorable decline into middle age, or has anyone got the solution out there. Quote

Does the engine appear to be turning over at the same speed as it always used to, or does it sound as if the starter is struggling to turn it over? Are you still on the original battery? Do you keep the key turned for 30 seconds or so, or do you release it and have to have several long attempts to get it started? Quote
Guest russ b Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Thanks for the questions and hopefully here are the answers .....Original battery but tried a new one with no difference.Runs OK once started and starts OK when warm.Starter motor is not struggling but we do keep it turning to get it started usually. Slightly easier if ignition turned on for about 30 seconds before turning it over.???????? Quote
Guest Turbo Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I know you have had the glow plugs changed, but I would have them checked again just to make sure. I think there`s a relay linked to the glow plugs too. It could be faulty. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Agreed - if it's not the glow plugs, it's the circuit that activates them. Probably the relay or whatever thermostatic device decides that they need to be activated. If the engine runs OK once started, and re-starts once hot, it has to be a glow-plug related fault. Churning the starter to get a cold engine to go also strongly suggests a glow-plug related fault. Quote

Ours suffered with this problem and would start fine once warm but didn't want to know when cold, and I too changed the glow plugs and the battery before I gave up and took it to the dealer. The dealer changed the engine temperature senderThe part number is V357 919 501A Since then no problems. Hope this helps Quote
