Wondering if anybody else has come across a similar problem or migh have some sugestions.

 

Car's just been in for service; all the usual stuff plus the alternator belt was replaced becasue it was getting old.

 

But now when the engine has warmed up i.e. the temp. gauge needle moves over into the mid-area, a squealing noise starts come from the engine.

 

It appears to be from around the left hand side area (looking in on the engine from the front), but I'm not sure.

 

Garage have said it's just the new belt bedding in, and give it a few hundred miles.

But why would it be related to engine temperature ?

 

Any ideas ?

They said it`s just bedding in ? It sounds like they need to tighten it up properly to me. Sometimes new belts make a liitle noise but it shouldn`t be that bad.

If its the belt, shouldn't the squealing alter as the engine is speed changes - especially when revved or going through the gears?

 

As the engine warms and things expand, then the belt could become slightly loose.

New belts bedding in? :( Do new cars squeal when you drive them from the showroom? - "Don't worry sir, its just your car bedding in..." :(

 

Loose belts usually screach after you start and battery is low and demanding large charging current.

 

Sounds a little to me like they overtightened the belt and its your water pump or one of the other rotating pulleys squealing - in which case irreversible damage may already be done.

 

Check belt tension.

Yes, the belt and pump have a different type of squeal.

 

In my younger days, l messed up an engine by continuing to tighten the fan belt the more l heard a squeal

:(

 

l now know what each one sounds like

Not sure if Mk1 2.3L has a manually adjusted tensioner or a spring loaded one like the MkII.

 

To quote Ford TIS (for MkII - no such advice for Mk I)..

 

Accessory Drive Belt Noise or Squeal

 

Possible Source(s): Accessory drive components worn or damaged.

 

Action(s) to take: CHECK the system with the engine running and the accessory drive belt removed (only run the engine for a very short period). If the noise is still apparent with the accessory drive belt removed, the cause is not the accessory drive system. If the noise is not apparent with the accessory drive belt removed, DETERMINE where the noise is coming from. CHECK pulley(s) for freedom of rotation or damage. REPAIR or INSTALL new parts as necessary.

 

Possible Source(s): Accessory drive belt idler pulley.

 

Action(s) to take: CHECK accessory drive belt idler pulley for freedom of rotation or damage. REPAIR or INSTALL new parts as necessary.

Thanks everybody for all your suggestions.

 

The noise either didn't seem to increse with engine spped, or I couldn't hear it because of the increased noise; it definitely seemed loudest when the engine was just idling.

 

Anyway, after doing about 200 miles over the weekend, the noise has reduced considerably; it now sounds more like the rattle of a failing waterpump.

 

But the garage say waterpump, alternator & idler are fine. Perhaps it is just the belt "bedding" in ???

Try spraying a liitle WD40 onto the belt. If it goes quiet for a while chances are it`s the belt. You can actually buy a belt dressing, which quietens noisy belts, although for how long I don`t know. I have tried it on a Peugoet I had and it went quiet for a couple of days.

I've seen the TIS mentioned elsewhere - looks pretty good from the extract you've shown. As it's a MK 2 one I guess that covers the facelifted cars ie. my Alhambra. Can you please tell me where you can get the TIS.

Never got this squeal to go away.

 

And its become more prominent again in recent days.

 

Funny thing is it disappears when the engine is accelerated; once constant speed is attained, it creeps back in. And it seems loudest when switching off the engine.

 

I'm beginning to suspect a "sticky" tensioner, as some have suggested.

 

I have to say the garage I've been using hasn't filled me with confidence lately (Towcester Vehicle Services).

 

Nimrod recently "strongly recommended" a garage near me, so I'll get their opinion.

I got this problem of a noisey belt when the engine is warm and it only happens in winter. It is probably a lot more noticable on the petrol; there very quiet when idling. This is not the loose belt squeal but a mild irritating scuffing noise.

This year I had a closer look and found no problems so I have just sprayed some belt dressing on it and the problem has gone and never returned to date, 4-5 weeks. I suspect it could be contamination from road salt, there was evidence of salty white specks around the pully fronts. Time and conditions will tell.

My 2.3 Auto 1999 makes a belt noisy when idlying bad spelling I know :rolleyes:.

Can only see the alternator belt from the top where would the others be ?. Can get some belt dressing but no good without the belts :unsure:.

Any idea's on hows best to view them ?, was amazed that 1 could be changed in 5 mins spent longer than that trying to see 1 :).

idling ............. doesnt look right either but I looked it up :rolleyes:

 

you only have one drive belt, so the bit you can see is part of it

Hmmm only 1 belt... thought it had more but thks for looking :rolleyes:.

What about the aircon pump as this seems to have something to do with the noise I am sure ?, does that not have some fancy electric / belt drive ?.

PS alternator belt seemed plenty tight enough and an absolute sod to get @ :unsure:.

Water pump, power steering pump, AC compressor and the alternator are all driven by the aux drive belt

AC compressor has a electro mechanical clutch on it and is only powered when you hit the switch, but the drive pully is permenantly powered by the drive belt

Guess its that making the noise then seems worse with the AC on than off must produce more load etc :lol:.

Might try a little spray of belt stuff... work might have a drop handy :lol:.

This is going to sound weird but trust me for a minute.

Some years ago i went to scotland we my 2.0 '96 galaxy.

Whilst there i keep getting a screeching noise for the belt,being a long way from home and the bum was starting to pout,I went to a ford garage and told them,

a mechanic came out with a bottle and puffed come white powder on the belt whilst the engine was running (was it coke i hear you say)

The noise stopped straight away and never came back.

The magic powder was..................talc no special talc unless you want a nice smell from the engine.

Just puff it and listen to the noise go away!(I HOPE)NEWBIE

This squeal is common on the 2.3, it's the idler wheel on the tensioner. There is only 1 belt on the petrol 2.3 & the problem seem to be that the bearing on the idler starts wearing causing the wheel to scrub against the belt as it rotates. Spraying WD40 or some other lubricant on to the belt ---sparingly---solves the problem for a short while.
