Vince Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 Our 2.8 auto is low in power and spluttering like crazy. Have just read the fault codes and get 00533...00533 - Idle Speed Regulation: Adaptation Limit (Add) Exceeded and 0066800668 - Supply Voltage Terminal 30: Signal Outside Specifications 668 might be because I tried the battery off reset, but I could do with some help with the Speed Regulation fault. Is there some likely explaination or should I book it into a garage :-( Vince. mk2vr6 Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 00533 - Idle Speed Regulation: Adaptation Limit (Add) Exceeded...... trycleaning then reseting the throttle body, clear the codes, switch on the ignition but dont start the engine, dont touch the throttle pedal, leave the ignition on for a few minutes, you should then hear the throttle body motor going through its movement range and resetting its basic parameters or there is a way via vag com to do the above if that doesnt work! Vince Posted May 6, 2008 Author Report Posted May 6, 2008 Thanks for the answer, sounds much cheaper than the dealers, the only thing I need a little more on is where the throttle body is! I did search but didn't find anything. Regards,Vince. Quote
Vince Posted May 6, 2008 Author Report Posted May 6, 2008 Ok, looked in TIS and discovered this is on the head at the back, can you explain what is involved in cleaning it please? Vince. Quote
Vince Posted May 6, 2008 Author Report Posted May 6, 2008 I found some infomation by searching with Google... It says to take the air inlet hose off and get in the chamber with a wire brush and carb cleaner, is this right? Thanks,Vince. Quote
mk2vr6 Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 remove the rubber intake hose from the throttle body and give the throttle body/butterfly valve a good squirt of carb cleaner, gently mop up the excess fluid/crap, open the valve manually via the cable pully and spray into the body, again mop up the excess fluid/crap replace the hose and fire up the engine to burn off any vapour and fluid left over, try not to exert any pressure on the butterfly valve itself! if you bend or distort it your screwed! but if you do screw it up I have a nice new shiny one stashed under the bed I could be possible persuaded to part with :D it would take a lot of persuading but I'm sure the mrs would let it go  Quote

Vince Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 Thanks very much mk2vr6, I will get some cleaner lunchtime and have a go at this tonight. Vince. Quote
Vince Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 Some progress! Thanks to mk2vr6 the fault code seems to have gone. Initially the 533 code was coming back, the 5 minutes on ignition didn't make any obvious noises and the code was coming back, then the fault stopped comming back. Unfortunately it's still running like a little tank. Ok for the first few minutes, then jumping around like there are bunnies in the cylinders. But no faults.I have tried pulling off the plug leads (taking precautions) and all the leads are sparking ok. The leads and plugs have only been on there for a year or so. The coil pack is only about 6 months old. Any ideas people? ThanksVince.P.S. (El Dingo, could be a pint in it for you if you want to pop round the corner and take a look!) Quote
Vince Posted May 8, 2008 Author Report Posted May 8, 2008 Any ideas? I am thinking about changing the plugs and leads out of desperation! Vince. Quote
sepulchrave Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 It's almost certainly the leads, don't do it out of desparation though because then you'll buy cheap useless leads! Plugs should be fine though. Quote
sepulchrave Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 You can't tell that way, since they only break down under load! Quote
Vince Posted May 8, 2008 Author Report Posted May 8, 2008 Well that has sorted it! Now I want to know how and why! Is it the fact that no fault code is reported that points to a problem after the coilpack? Is this a known issue that the leads break down and give these symptoms? I can understand that the load on the lead and plug is less at tickover because it's not being fired as often. The plugs the motor factors supplied have four spark gaps, the ones on the car had two, does this make much difference? I ask these questions because I work in IT support where you learn that you cannot just say X fixes Y unless you know that X is the ONLY cause of Y. There can be many causes of the same symptoms! Thanks again to those that have offered advice, I am so pleased the car is working correctly again. Vince. Quote
