Hi there. Been a viewer of the site for nearly a year now since buying a Galaxy for the wife.

Anyway, I'm having a problem with the handbrake at the moment. The actuator arm seems to stick on the O/S caliper. This is probably due to us having to park on a hill so we always put it in gear and crank the handbrake on.

I searched the site and found only one other post about this problem, and that suggested that the actuator mechanism wasn't serviceable. No problem, I'll get a caliper from a breakers and fit it. Here's where the problems come in. I can't work out which caliper I need! The car is a 2001 Galaxy (mk2) TDI 115 Ghia and has 16" wheels (complete with the ubiquitous lacquer peel...). I found a caliper from a 2.8 Alhambra, and according to www.vagcat.com (very useful!) it shares the same caliper with the 16" wheeled cars. The guy at the breakers seems to the think the 115 and the 130 bhp models have different sized calipers.

Can anyone shed any light?

Whilst I have no experience of galaxy caliper sizes, I can tell you that the last service exchange caliper I bought from a motor factors (not a galaxy one tho') was about the same price as the second hand one you are looking at!

Measure the diameter of the brake disk and phone a reputable motor factors, they may be more helpful than the breakers.

Good call fella. Hadn't considered that. I'm gonna whip the wheel off tonight and note the part number on the caliper as well, just in case, but I'll deffo measure the disc.

Cheers buddy.

Theres definately at least two sizes of rear disks, I replaced mine last year and I would imagine the caliper is different for each.

For Mk 2 Galaxy, Ford ECat lists two calipers for the rear - Mk2 2.8 V6 24V (All) YM21-2B118-AA, while all non V6 Mk2's (and all Mk 1's) have a 95VW-2B118-CA irrespective of wheel size.

Similar story up front, where only the V6 24V is listed with a unique caliper.

I would think it would be the same story with the Alhambra - you need to know if it is from a 12V or 24V model.

Cheers guys, just measured the disc (as best as I could!) and it measured 268mm, which according to vagcat is the disc used on the 15" wheel model, despite me having 16" wheels. Maybe it's because it's for the Sharan and Alhambra.

Oh well, at least I know what I'm looking for now. I'll see if I can get a caliper from a motor factors and take it from there.

George, useful info there - thanks. A fellow Northampton'er I see!
