Hello new to the site so I apologise if this has been posted before. I have looked but not found anything related to my query.

I have a Y reg man Pet Galaxy and I have only had it for 6 weeks. I have noticed that the windscreen wipers are slow. Is this normal for this car or do I have a problem?

I would say you do. There is a very common fault on Galaxys whereby the spindles of the wiper mechs lose or don't have any lubrication. They are chromed spindles but this seems to wear off and they seize - Usually the first signs of this are the wipers travelling slowly or stopping short of their normal travel. I had this on my MK2 - about 2 years ago and just recently again. In fact I removed the wiper mech yesterday and re greased them using coppa slip as the grease I used before seems to have all gone. My right hand wiper no longer travelled all the way over to the edge.

After taking it out and re greasing all is well. The problem is if you don't do something about it you will burn out the motor and then you have a large bill to pay . Do a search this has been covered extensively.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I apologise for repeating something that has been covered before. I wouldn't know where to begin in doing the work myself so I will ask the friendly ford mechanic I know to have a look.

Hope its not going to cost me too much. I have only just shelled out on a new water pump and now this too :)

Thanks again

there's a quick fix which i done on mine and all you got to do is open the bonnet. my wipers would not even work but now they do. get some wd40 open the bonnet turn the wipers on and look where the wiper motor is behind the black guard near the top and then spray wd40 on all moving parts of the wiper system no need to take anything apart. then repeat in a few months

Thanks for the help guys. I will try the WD40 and see how I go with that, if that fails then I will badger mumof4 lol

Cheers again :P

The only trouble with this is that WD40 is a degreaser and removes any lubrication you had in the first place. Yes it will probably free them off for a while but you will need to regrease the spindles to prevent them from seizing.

Very easy fix for this common fault, 5 minute no dismantling required, simply get an electric drill 2mm ish bit, drill through aluminium casting that the spindle runs through until the bit hits the spindle, approximately half way between the bottom link and the top where the wiper arm locates then apply a squirt of spray grease through the hole with the applicator pipe on the grease tin and whacko the diddle o .......... speedy wipers again, happy days.

Thanks Spitfiremac.

Drilled the holes. Squirted in the lubrication. Wipers work a treat.

One little bit extra I did was to seal the holes with a blob of silicon bathroom sealer. Don't push it down the hole, just blob it on the surface so the hole is covered. You will need to remove it next time lubrication is needed.

Oh yes. You need to clean the surface to get rid of all that lovely lubrication you've just squirted everywhere otherwise the silicon wont stick.
