Diy Oil Change

The only thing that has put me off doing my own oil change is that you have to remove the cover underneath the sump to get access to the sump plug. I don't have access to a ramp or a pit. How difficult is it to get this cover off with the car on the ground?

It does need to be off the ground - I use ramps but I have also just jacked it up and used Axle stands. There are 4 10mm bolts either side and two 10mm nuts underneath. Once you have it safely raised it is quite easy.

Never done a MK1 but on the MK2 there are about 6 10mm bolts holding it on.

Not sure if it will drop and slide out with the car on the ground as ive only done mine on a pair of drive on ramps.

I know you can buy a suction device that pushes a long pipe down the dip stick tube to suck the oil out of the sump but i have never tried one

Hi did mine this weekend mines a mk2, undo the bolts whilst car is on the floor. Lift one side of the car by about 4 inches ( wheel doesnt come off the ground) Pull out underguard and release the jack . Fitting is reverse but use the trolley jack to lift underguard into place whilst you bolt it up

It takes longer to take off and put on the guard than to do the oil change ;)

Nah.....you don't even need to jack up the car....... :)

 

Undo the 6 bolts - 2 on each side (either side of the wheel) and two at the rear. You need a socket set with an extension to reach the bolts.

 

Lower the tray to the ground and you have a perfect secondary drip tray to catch the oil from spinning off the filter that doesnt go in the bowl.

 

When putting the tray back, offer the front end up first, *above* the bumper mounted clips, then lift the back and put the bolts back.

Watch out when trying to loosen the bolts on the undertray-sods law will probably mean that the bolts are rusted and might round off when using a 10 mm socket , i had to get an old 3/8 th socket and tap it on to the bolts and GENTLY loosen the bolts ,might be better to get some new bolts rather than re-use the old ones.
