I've done 3.5K miles in the 6 weeks I've had the car and so far the only issue I have is one of slight hesitation under the following conditions:

Small amount of throttle, constant speed, say 50 to 70mph. Lift off very slightly and then increase throttle again slightly, and there is a slight hesitation felt as a small amount of deceleration before it picks up again in about half a second. Will do it at lower speed in lower gears.

Anyone else had this? Its so minor I'll probably leave it until the 1st service, but is is stating to irritate me as its more noticeable now I have started to drive more economically (I used to think the throttle was an on-off switch  )

What gear are you in when your using light acceleration at 50 - 70mph?

If you're in 6th then I would expect it as 4th and 5th gears are more appropriate for that road speed. If you're in too high a gear for the road speed with insufficent revs coming off the gas and going back on in the way you describe will produce hesitation in any vehicle.

Definitely not normal. Its not a delay before it responds, but a slight deceleration as throttle is re-applied. Does it at about 1500 to 2500 rpm in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. e.g. cruising on the flat at 70 mph in 6th.

Bob ...... having had a couple cars with this engine you'll find that this is normal particularly around 1800 RPM with the engine under load. My old 2.0 litre felt as though it was missing so I did a fair bit of research on this and found many people had the same problem. "It's the way you drive it".

Just a thought .......... How many miles has the car actually done? ..... did you buy it from new? Another possible cause is the EGR valve, which are notorious on this engine, or the intercooler to EGR valve hose splitting.

There is an interesting split of opinion on this. I would favour the "not normal" option, with the proviso that it depends on the revs. Most turbo-diesels suffer from turbo lag to some extent. Above 1800-1900 rpm you should have no problem as the turbo is running and the engine is producing lots of torque. However, below that, and especially below about 1500 rpm, there is little turbo boost and the engine will struggle to accelerate, especially in a higher gear. The easy and very obvious answer to this is keep the revs above 1500 rpm or so - but that is just "normal" driving.

Mine does the same, almost un-noticable, but.. this may sound harsh, live with it! The last thing I would want is for some spotty kid let loose on my motor from a Ford dealer offerering work experiance. Edited by Nick

Thanks for all the comments.

It soes seem to happen at about 1800rpm.

It does feel just like the engine is missing; its a long time since I had a car do that!

Definitely not related to turbo-lag, it really does feel like the engine cuts power briefly.

So, sounds like I have a problem that a number of people have and live with (Mondeo owners too). I think I'll go down the fix-it route at the first service. I'll let you know what happens...

Bob.

PS Its 3500 miles from new.

It is a trait of all turbo diesels in my experience. It may also be made more pronounced these days when engines are mapped to meet emissions and fuel economy targets and hence fuelling could be restricted under certain circumstances (such as a large throttle opening at low revs).

I strongly suspect the engine could be re-mapped (ie the engine management computer could be re-programmed) to improve this, but at the expense of some of these other "political" factors.

By the way, has anyone on this forum tried a Bluefin or Code-Red remap ?

I have not read this group for ages and then I read three posts and thought I'd written them myself, its amazing how the problems I have noticed with my Sept 07 Galaxy Ghia 2.0 have been described so perfectly by others!

Well Bob, I have exactly what you describe and was also intending leaving it to the first service. I was a little concerned of some Ford mechanic poking and hoping as the problem is very slight but annoying all the same.

The scenario I most often notice it is when on the motorway where you might have taken your foot off the accelerator at say 70mph then apply a little power and you get that fraction of a secong hesitation.

Amazing, I'll go and see if I can find any of my other niggles now!

Let me know how you get on, I will be interested to know how/if they can fix this!

Have had similar problems but more in low gears with car not seeming to respond, in the end she wouldn't actually start without giving the accelarator and pump when turning the key, turns out it was some air inlet value sticking, which was covered under the warrentee.

My May 2007 new model galaxy has problems too, we've had a string of trim defects and even a factory fitted mishapen alloy wheel!

Our engine lurches from low revs, if you try to accelerate gently from 1200 rpm up it seems to pulse on and off resulting in a very uncomfortable and probably-not-too-good-for-the-transmission lurching feeling. I have a SEAT Leon 1.9 Tdi and it is as smooth as silk from 900rpm all the way to 6000. However I had that remapped after about 6000 miles. It has now done 90000 miles and absolutely no problems, smooth and fun to drive. I also owned an Alhambra 1.9TDi before our galaxy and the eninge in that was fine too.

I would like to hear if any new model galaxy owners have remapped their engines? There are lots of products around on the market to do it, does anyone have any experiences with a remapped 2.0 TDCi engine?

Well, the car has had its first (12500 mile) service and I mentioned the hesitation; the Ford dealer did a software update and it now seems to be OK! The MPG seems a little better too although I need to give it a few weeks to be sure.

Whats an erg valve and how the hell do I find out where it is and would this explain bad mpg 20-25mpg and smokey on start up and exceleration.

Thanks

egr -Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

In simple terms it means that it recycles some of the gases back into the engine to get rid of the harmful emissions.

Without knowing your vehicle details in full it is pretty hard to tell if its fitted - but the answer will probably be 'yes'.

Possible causes for your loss in mpg and other symptoms is that the egr is not operating effeciently at low temperatures, meaning short journeys. It is recommended that at least once a week, the engine is given a good run, with a mix of fast acceleration and high revs (without speeding and red lining). This will in return keep the egr functioning properly.
