djx Posted April 20, 2008 Report Posted April 20, 2008 my 2.8 v6 galaxy is misfiring, this is a lot worse at a cold start and gets better as the car warms up i am thinking spark plugs leads and coilpack, today i have check the coilpack and am getting reading of 4.36kohms, 4.35kohms and 4.20kohms. this doesnt mean a lot to me but as the reading for the last ones were slightly lower i didnt know if this indicated a fauly coilpack. are there any other suggestions on what to look for first. i have put vag-com on it and have no fault codes at all, thanks, john. sepulchrave Posted April 20, 2008 Report Posted April 20, 2008 Don't worry too much about the readings, the fault lies with the physical degradation of the insulator as the coilpack ages. You may be able to see this in the dark as arcing across the casing. However it is more likely that one or more of your HT leads are failing. Change these first, you NEED the special plug cap tool, don't try without. Quote
djx Posted April 21, 2008 Author Report Posted April 21, 2008 yeah, cheers mate, i have a lead removal tool, incidently i changed the plugs, leads and coilpack in march 2007, so i was trying to eliminate one before i go spending again. Quote
rushy Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago. I started by replaceing the cheepest option, plugs. No different. Then changed the leads and that made a slight difference. I then tried the drying the coil pack in the oven trick but that made no difference so I ended up biting the bullet and buying a coil pack. I was fortunate to find a guy not too far from me with one on ebay, and with the help of a plee in an email I manged to pursuade the guy to end the auction early if I went straight over with cash. We fitted it there and then, and the minuite I fired the old Gal up I kne we'd found the cure!! One thing I did notice through all that, was my splash guard (back of the engine bay) was missing, and when I removed the back three leads they were corroded quite badly. and again when I gave her a clean this weekend I noticed that afterwards, water was dripping from the bottom of the screen, straight into the back three pots, which again caused a slight cough until the water had gone. Hope that helps. Quote
djx Posted April 22, 2008 Author Report Posted April 22, 2008 ok cheers for that advise mate, will take a look while im there, i've got the leads and plugs coming tommorrow so im goona try that first, i did notice today though that the gal smells VERY rich whilst running, any more ideas?? Quote
sepulchrave Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 (edited) It would smell rather rich since you have a misfiring cylinder pumping out unburnt mixture throught the exhaust! The fact that VAG-COM is clear simply confirms that your problem is with the HT circuit. Not all HT leads are created equal, you have just proved the old adage: "If you buy cheap, you'll buy twice". Edited April 22, 2008 by sepulchrave Quote
rushy Posted April 24, 2008 Report Posted April 24, 2008 Mine also smelt very rich, hence why it failed it's MOT due to sky high emmisions. Once the new coil pack was fitted it ran better than ever, better MPG, more pull and passed the emmisions with flying colours. I will hunt through my phone as the guy I bought the coil pack from dismantles a lot of Shalaxy's. Quote
geoff_s Posted June 21, 2008 Report Posted June 21, 2008 How easy is changing plugs on the 2.8? Mines done 90 000 & still on original plugs. I'm thinking about changing them, but a bit worried about how hard it may be. Quote
veedyf Posted June 22, 2008 Report Posted June 22, 2008 got a coilpack if you need one ring me on 07837 695 887 Quote
POMPEYFAITH Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 if you are getting arcing on the coil pack there is a simple fix for this rather than spending Quote
djx Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 wow, this is a topic i forgot about, it turned out to be the leads, thanks anyway. the spark plugs are easy enough to change, need to get a ht lead remover first though, dont bother trying without it Quote
