symptoms..

 

 

smoke on start up, every time,white smoke.and def from exhaust.

 

sounds like a bag of ball bearings on acid on start up from cold.once warm shes ok but still sounds rough but metallic noise gone.

 

one of the belts is jumping i think...tensioner maybe?

 

its not the cambelt..the other one, cant think of the name of it, sorry,will take a pic tomorrow.Fan belt?

 

when cold, glow plug light takes a few seconds to go out and she doesnt like starting, but she does on first time, just have to hold the key a couple of seconds or so longer than norm.

 

Im going to try recording the sounds she makes on start up from cold tomorrow.

 

not sure if i will be able to upload, but will try.

 

injectors need a clean maybe? is it a job i can do myself?

 

i cant have the car off road, if she is , kids dont get to school.

 

any ideas? help please?

 

not quite sure where to start with this baby, as the engine is kind of a mystery to me right now!

are you sure its White smoke? White smoke is the engine burning water i.e the head gasket maybe? if it has a blue tinge to it it will be burning oil and black smoke is unburnt fuel so i would get someone to do a head gasket check on it first but white smoke is burning water. How old is the gal? what Mk?

its only on start up when cold..

i am assumeing it is white, as it looks it when billowing past the window..will check in the morning.

 

shes a 1996 N reg MKI GLX TDi

 

i did check the oil filler cap the other day, no white cr@p on it at all.

If it hasn't had an oil change recently then that might be a good starting point, followed by a new Air filter. As for the injectors maybe an injector cleaner may help. Rattly noises could be anything and nothing - If the aux belt is making a noise then you need to ascertain what exactly is making the noise - it may be nothing or it may be the tensioner. The MK1 diesel is a solid engine so it's hopefully nothing too serious.

I would tend to agree with Insider although I wouldn't be too worried about it. The auxiliary drive belt tensioner wants looking at I reckon and with an engine that's done a fair few miles, it's important to do an oil and filter change more often ....... every 5000 miles is a good figure. You can remove the glow plugs while still electrically connected and see if they glow white hot when you first try and start it from cold. Be very careful not to touch them or allow them to touch anything that melts though!

Seemingly? ...... there was a post on a problem with the wiring to the glow plugs IIRC ...something to do with the loom as it passed over the rocker box. That might be worth checking

Well, yesterday was fun.Had a problem with the locking system!

 

only door that would unlock yesterday was the passenger door, when i went to unlock the drivers door, the windows went down and wouldnt go back up, not even with the switch on the inside.And none of the doors would unlock.

 

Tailgate would unlock to open and the passenger door would unlock and lock, but nothing else would.

 

I was on the flying field, grey clouds looming, blowing a gale, and my bloomin windows were stuck open.

 

i was not a happy bunny.

 

JB was there, and he tried the global closeing on the passengers side, which i hadnt thought to try as i had concentrated on the drivers side, windows closed and the drivers door would unlock.

 

took the door card off and he felt the inside up inside the door, and there is a bit broken on the lock,forgot to mention, that the key when i couldnt open the doors, would only spin to the right,

 

thanks mk2vr6 and nikpv for calling me back in regards to my pleas for help in regards to what the problem could be.Also thanks to JB for sorting the car out so the windows shut and doors unlocked and locked again

 

I am getting a kit off ebay so we can try and fix the lock.

 

but now, when i unlock the drivers door, passenger window goes down, JB disabled the drivers window so that wont go down.Hopefully that will be sorted once we fix the lock

 

will keep you posted on how it all goes when the kit arrives and we try and fix it.

 

so thanks to those that helped yesterday..

 

oh and thanks mk2vr6 for the sunvisor clip, all fitted...never had a package delivered addressed to PITB before :)

Sounds like the bottom pulley is loose, the key is sheared and the pulley(s) on the crankshaft move about upsetting the injection timing (white smoke) and throw the belt about.

Thanks for that SK, good to see you back.

 

Not long in after changing a tyre in Aldi car park!! came out to find a flat tyre, unfortunately, my two spare tyres were sat outside of my house, so i had to ring JB for help to get a tyre to me.!!

 

Moral of the story, put the spare in the car!! :)

132k, thats not bad really.

 

As has already been said,does sound like unburned[streamed] diesel coming out of the back,rather than head gasket problems.

 

Which would put the problem in the injector timing area,which isn't much help i know.

 

I asked about the mileage because a chap at work has just scrapped his mondeo est[n reg]

 

Engine was knackered at 160k,but the plonker had not even changed the oil in god knows how long,and the problem came out of the blue and worsened so quickly it was amazing.

 

Hoping its a easy[cheap] fix.....

This sounds very much like unburnt fuel possibly due to low compression ratio but I would start by checking the pre-heat and running heat of the glowplugs, as you know to meet emission regulations the glowplugs continue to aid burning fuel until the entire engine reaches the correct running conditions it may be hte relay is dropping our before the engine is running properly. It is a pulsed delivery of votage to reduce the temperature of the plugs gradually as the engine temp increases.

To test it you need to connect a volt meter to the plugs and keep it connected during the first 5 minutes of running if its a digital meter then you will see a graduall reduction from 12v to 0 if its an analogue meter then the needle will bounce up and down a bit until it stops at zero when the engine is up to temperature.

It spossible the temperature sender is innaccurate giving this as as result of thinking the engine is already hot.

The Hydraulic cups that operate the valves may be worn and as such the lack of retained oil will cause this kind of noise and unfortunately it will only get worse, a full oil flush and fresh oil and filters my reduce it somewhat. It may also help to turn the engine over on the key before applying the accelrator when starting from cold to allow some oil pressure ot be built up before the engine starts.

The fan belt tensioner on the MK1 TDi has a habit of wearing through the casting and it rattles like a nutter on speed.

Replacing it is fairly straight forward although the alternater and steering pump and air compressor will need to be removed. New I think the cost new was around 100 quid but I am sure now there are so many in the scrappies you should be able to get hold of one cheaper.

Proprietry injector cleaner in the fuel will help here.

IIRC, the glowplugs don't stay on after the engine has started with this engine

Roight, couple of things, pulling out of morrys car park today i thought, hmmmm,, sounds like someone is knocking on the engine trying to get in.

 

Drop links me thinks,

 

so off i pops to a garage ive never been to before after driving around looking at all the different garages, and i just picked one.

 

Guy says, can i help you, i says, i think my drop links have gone, he rocks car and all you can hear is a loud knocking, and he goes, yup, your right!

 

so iasks, would you mind if you put the car in the air so you can show me please,

 

no problem he replies,

 

so up in the air she goes, and i am shown what the prob links, so i say ok, how much to replace em, off he trots, makes a phone call and comes back, 32 quid all in.cool, book her in then!

 

im having a gander and i notice some nice black oil all around the sump plug, crap thinks i and asks to borrow the guys sabre light thingymebob, i has a closer gander up into the engine, and i find the rear of the engine is coated with the stuff, flippin hell thinks i, oh dear says guy, not half oh dear!!

 

seal on sump plug is gone and i have an oil leak further up! i suggest rocker cover, he says you could be right, but he says oil leaks can be a barsteard to find as you have to clear all the old crappy oil off the engine and then see where its coming from, its def up in the engine bay and is splattered all over the back...

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.............

oh, by the way, drivers door lock is fixed, thanks to this little beut :P

Now my drivers door locks and unlocks all the doors.

 

It was a wee bit fiddly to put together , but JB managed to do it.lol.I couldnt make head nor tails of the instructions.So called in the calvary. :)

 

still to do, wing mirror, revers lights, tailgate lock, and put door card back on.

 

not much really.LMAO.....

I think the reversing light problem and tailgate may be related to the broken wiring as it enters the tailgate !.....maybe.

 

The rocker cover gasket should be an easy enough job if this is the problem.

 

Wing mirrors are easy enough to do...its just getting one at a reasonable price !

 

I am sure you have had a door card of before so you should manage this ok.

 

There you go easy peasy...you could do all this lot on a Sunday morning... :)

drop links were done this morning, cost me 32 quid , and took them 45 mins to do em, someone had obviously tried to change them before, the nuts were partially rounded off, so made it a weeee bit difficult for them, heres a couple of pics....
