Auto Gearbox Fluid Change 2.3 Gal 1997 Help Please

Hi,am new to this site and not very good at finding my way around it at the moment.Would appreciate any help with the technical aspects of the above topic.Cant seem to find a precice thread so far.Would like to use fully synthetic oil if poss,does anyone know of any suitable and where i can source it?Thanks in advance.

You need touse a Dexron III fluid. I used Comma ATF from my local motor factors and paid £18.99 for 5 litres. Halfords also sell the same stuff but it is £21.99 there. If your doind a simple drain and refill then you need approx 3 litres but I would suggest taking the sump off and changing the filter (VW call it the oil strainer) but you will need 6-7 litres of fluid.

 

you need to bring the tansmission fluid up to temp before draining (you can either use VAG-COM to check the temp or idle the car for about 5-10mins)
