At last oil change i put fully synthetic oil into my 110 TDI

My 5 litres have all gone, used for oil change and top ups.

Can I continue to top up with semi-synthetic.

Can they be mixed or should i buy some more fully synthetic

Regards

Hello to all

Mixing oils

You can add anything of the correct grade for the engine to SEMI SYNTHETIC. You can can NOT add mineral to synthetic.

The 115 bhp tdi galaxy 2001 engine is best used with PD oli from main dealer as it has an addative that stops the oil from rotting the wiring loom inside the cylinder head.

Semi synthetic is, by definition, a mix of mineral and synthetic oil. Virtually all modern engine oils (of the type sold for road going cars) are mixable. Depending on what you mix and in what quantities, you end up with a blend that has a grade and characteristic somewhere in between the two oils used. Blending is what the oil companies do to give you the wide range of products that are available!

So in brief, yes you can use semi synthetic to top up even though it may contain full synthetic.

HOWEVER, ensure you use oil that has the appropriate approval! As flashgordon points out, PD engines require specially formulated oil (VW505.01 or better) mainly to prevent premature wear of the camshaft. IIRC You can add up to 1 litre of certain grades of non PD oil as a topup in an "emergency" - read you vehicle's manual for more detail.

Older TDi engines are a better design and are far less fussy about oil.

Yep, I would be inclined to agree with Seatkid, I was that impressed with the old AFN 110bhp engine that I thought I would invest in the newer pd engine Polo for the wife, from my experience (and coupled up with what I read here) they are a totally different animal, it is a bit more powerfull I will agree but the price of the oil is absolutely scandalous and it never gets even gets near the economy that I get from my old gal. ;)

Long may it live, I am more than happy with the trade off!!!

If she is like my wife it is because she is driving a diesel like it is a petrol. Revving it too high and changing up gears too late and downshifting too soon. Oh and also that girly thing where they fail to read the road ahead and then slam the brakes on at the last minute....
