Boozynights Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 First of all apologies I aint posted for a while, new job takes up most of my time. I have a problem now though and need some help as we are due to take the kids away Friday for a well earned break. Wife has limped home in the gal tonight (1.9 TD Auto mk1 yr 2000) engine management light on (flashing) brake lights not working, and also you have to switch it off to move the gear selector, keep foot on brake - back into park to start up then move selector to D, she wont go into gear with engine running. I've done a search and found something about a switch? but would this also cause the selector problem? Any advise would be great, gonna have to hire a motor now to get us up the lakes which eats into the spends! Cheers all Quote
wobble67 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 Hi I don't know about the engine management light but I do know that the auto galaxy has an actuater switch fitted to the gear selector that stops you moving the drive selector to certain gears if your foot is not on the brake, ie selecting drive from neutral or reverse or to park. to test it leave the car in park and start the engine. listen near the gear selector and gently put your foot on the brake...you should hear the actuator click. sorry I can't be any more help but its a starting point Quote
Boozynights Posted April 2, 2008 Author Report Posted April 2, 2008 Cheers guys, next daft question is how do I identify the switch, where is it and what does it look like? Quote
NikpV Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 its on the brake pedal arm - AA man kindlt wd40ed ours when we got the car in 2002 - it had been standing a while and needed freeing up (before I found this site) its been ok since Quote
wobble67 Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 I think NikpV has hit the nail on the head If the brake light switch on the brake pedal is not working that will explain the brake lights, the switch also has a second function that enables the actuater switch that locks the gear selector. If you cannot get the switch working try unplugging it and linking the two wires together with a short bit of cable. With the ignition on the brake lights should come on, with the engine running you should be able to select reverse or drive from the park position. Please make sure your handbrake is firmly on first and wheels chocked if required Quote
Boozynights Posted April 3, 2008 Author Report Posted April 3, 2008 Once again cheers, it's in the garage now as I type, hopefully the part is readilly available otherwise it's either car hire or dust down my Delica! Quote
