chromedome Posted March 28, 2003 Report Posted March 28, 2003 When driving along in my 2.3 Zetec with a window open I get a strong smell of petrol. The car has been in and out the garage for some time now trying to find the fault. To date they've replaced a kinked pipe and the roll-over valve but I still get the same problem. Well they have had the care for a week now and have tested the three remaining valves on the fuel system but can't find anything wrong with them. As the car is still under manufacturers warranty they are going to replace all three valves. All I can say is the fuel system must be really complicated. Anyone else having problems? Quote
Guest saint Posted March 31, 2003 Report Posted March 31, 2003 Hi, I'm currently getting a strong petrol smell after a journey from the petrol filler area. Any ideas. Thanks Pete Quote
chromedome Posted April 3, 2003 Author Report Posted April 3, 2003 Today the Dealer changed all three valves on the fuel system and my petrol smell has disappeared. I've now noticed that my petrol cap "hisses" when I remove it, it never made a sound before. I've also noticed that the filler nozzle is different. Is there a mod to the Galaxy that we're not being told about? Quote
Guest p1948040 Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 chromedome as you may remember I too have been suffering from a petrol smell. The car has been in several times, last time they say they found a disconnected breather pipe under off-side rear wheel arch that goes to the filler neck. Initialy seemed to cure the problem, but recently noticed the smell is back. Never had a hissing noise from the petrol filler neck on mine though. Can you give us some details on the 'valves' ? I need to go back to my dealer again... Cheers Quote
chromedome Posted April 11, 2003 Author Report Posted April 11, 2003 Sorry, all I know is they changed all the valves on the fuel system. The dealer said all valves tested OK but they changed them because of all the visits I made with the same problem. They said there was no info about the problem on their TIS. I have noticed that the filler neck area is different to what I used to have, hence, is there a mod? They did make some comment about me having VW parts but I don't think that should make any difference. The whole saga is a mystery, however, if your car is under three years old get them to fix it for health and safety reasons. It's a good job no one smokes in our family otherwise we would have blown up long ago. Seriously though, petrol fumes are a hazard and could affect your driving ability without you even realising and the end results don't bear thinking about. My dealers info is:- T.C.Harrison (Peterborough)01733 425555 Just in case your dealer wants to talk to a mechanic at my garage about it. Hope the info helps a little. Quote
Guest p1948040 Posted April 14, 2003 Report Posted April 14, 2003 many thanx for the info. Looks like another call to the dealer for me! out of interest you mentioned that the fual cap now makes a hissing noise when undoing - ours has never done this, is it very noticeable noise now ? thanx againMartin. chromedome Posted April 14, 2003 Author Report Posted April 14, 2003 Yeah it's noticable, more of a "woosh" when you start to undo it and then hisses. There should be a section on the forum for sound effects hehehe!! Quote
Guest simon D Posted April 16, 2003 Report Posted April 16, 2003 a hissing noise from the fuel tank is quite normal as the system is pressurised. Quote
Guest p1948040 Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 does anybody else get a hiss when un-doing the fual cap - mine has never made a noise ? Quote
Guest Pete C Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 No.no noise from ours either.Wouldn't a hiss indicate air going into a depressurised tank? ie the fuel has gone out but no air can get in to replace it until you take the cap off?Wouldn't this result in a deformed tank after a while?Simon,I don't think the fuel system is pressurised before the fuel pump or is it? chromedome Posted May 1, 2003 Author Report Posted May 1, 2003 P1948040 I've sent the info you wanted. What a saga this is turning out to be. Quote
Guest p1948040 Posted May 3, 2003 Report Posted May 3, 2003 you can say that again. Yesterday, dealer replaced the whole petrol filler neck/pipe assembly after finding broken nipple on one of the valves attached to the neck - talk about a complicated design, pipes, valves, vapour collection manifolds - all this just to let you put petrol in the car. Anyway, reckons this is the fault, we'll see.... Cheers for now. Quote
Guest Elwood Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 (sing mode on) T.C. Harrison, there's no comparrison! (sing mode off) hoho (understandable, only ppl to local to peterborough may understand my humor here) Quote
