sip Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Follow-up from my post of May 15 2008, 22:05:33 -- this is my tale of woe: About 10 weeks ago, my Galaxy 2.0GLX Auto started playing up. First, it overheated because I think I had not fully tightened the coolant reservoir cap. The car would not start, so I disconnected the battery earth, waited 10 seconds, reconnected battery lead and it started. The problem occurred intermittently until it went into the garage for a service, where it just would not start. The garage checked the car over and came up with two faults: Mass Air Flow Meter was showing a fault and the red LED on the door was flashing like crazy. They advised sorting these problems first before servicing the car. After much struggling, managed to get the car home. Changed relays 30 and 167, car would not start. Located a Hitachi-branded after market MAF meter, but car would still not start. Now, my car came with one RED key, one Torch Key and one standard key. Tried to reprogram by using method from Ford TIS, but the red LED on door did not respond as expected. Disconnected battery for 10 days to see if this reset all the electronics, but still no joy. Eventually, decided to take the cowling off the steering wheel, and the lower dash on drivers side. Got my hand behind the fuse box and made sure all plugs were nice and tight. Removed each fuse and each relay and re-fitted. The immobiliser in the key talks to the transponder around the ignition barrel. I followed the thick cable from the transponder and located the PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) box just above the lower section of the steering column. Made sure plugs nice and tight. This was about two weeks ago and by now, I was without a car for almost 8 weeks and tearing my hair out!! Turned the key in the ignition and the bloody thing started up. The only problem is that on the 2.0 Auto, you're supposed to get Ford to reprogram the ECU using their FDS2000 kit when you mess around with the MAF meter or the PATS (even if you disconnect/reconnect wiring plugs). Now, I had the car in the driveway for two weeks and each day I would start her up just to make sure the intermittent fault hadn't returned, as the MOT test had come due mid-June. The revs at idle are supposed to be 850RPM, but my Gal was running at 1250RPM, and debated whether I should get Ford to reprogram the ECU, but decided against it. Took the car in for MOT today (I've left the lower dash cover off) and she passed without problems. Ran the car for a couple of miles and the revs are now down to 850RPM, so the ECU has started to learn already. For info on PATS and key programming, download this document PATS_and_Keys.pdf Quote
Gary Waite Posted June 25, 2009 Report Posted June 25, 2009 (edited) The bin has not delivered! Looks like I'm browsing eBay and saving up for the dealers. Can life get any worse, my cars grounded and I've spent over an hour going through the bin of waste and dirty nappies........yuk Wobble67, today I was exactly in the same position as you were then, and it seemed my only option (having only ONE key fob) was to trawl through the (currently full) kitchen bin! ...but, I'm glad I did - it was horrible, but unbelievably, I found it! And when I re-inserted it back into the key the immobiliser got out of the way and the car started! It seems then that this "PATS" can easily fall out when the key fob is opened - bad design in my view! Edited June 25, 2009 by Gary Waite Quote
