Rwills Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 Just picked up my new Galaxy today! Maybe a stupid question but how do I get the sound from the dvd player through the cars main audio system so I don't have to use the wireless headsets? Quote
mjpimlett Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Hi it is not an option they will only work through the headphones. Quote
wibble Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Just picked up my new Galaxy today! Maybe a stupid question but how do I get the sound from the dvd player through the cars main audio system so I don't have to use the wireless headsets? I have a different setup to you so back to basics..... If you have an aux input to your radio (top right inside glove box, like a plastic washer with a tiny hole, and you have headphone sockets then you can add a cable, which would be messy. A better option but subject to interference and flat AA bateries, is one of those wireless adaptors that let you play ipods etc. through a small fm transmitter to your radio. They should cost less than a tenner these days if you shop around. Quote
Rwills Posted April 2, 2008 Author Report Posted April 2, 2008 Thanks for the reply The problem I have is that there are no audio out jacks anywhere in the car. Only IR headphones can receive sound so an FM transmitter is not an option. I do find this fairly puzzling as it is a Quote
wibble Posted April 2, 2008 Report Posted April 2, 2008 I've not seen your headsets so don't know if this is practical. A drastic solution could be to gain access to the speaker connections on one of the headsets and feed that via the socket of FM transmitter. I expect it would be really expensive to buy extra headsets and that they wouldn't work in the front? Good luck anyway. It does sound like a serious oversight! Quote
Rwills Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 Thanks...now sorted! Cheap and easy too..anyone looking to do the same just post and I'll help cheers Quote
mjpimlett Posted May 22, 2008 Report Posted May 22, 2008 Hi yes i am very interested in how you get the sound via the speakers as i have the same problem with the children Quote
Rwills Posted June 2, 2008 Author Report Posted June 2, 2008 Hi Thanks for all the requests for a solution, I'm just sorry it's taken me so long to post. I'll try to make this as simple as possible! On the rear of the player is a spare set of pin outs which aren't being used. This is called cavity Y. There are 8 pins set out as: x1 x3 x5 x7x2 x3 x6 x8 pin1 is AV3 out audio Lpin2 is AV3 out audio GNDpin3 is AV3 out audio R n.b. I'm assuming at this point you have an auxillary jack in the glove compartment as otherwise things may get slightly more tricky for you! You need to connect a 3.5mm stereo jack into the aux socket and run a screened 2m audio cable finished with 3 loose crimped terminals into pins 1,2,3 L,R,GND. You really should use the correct plug to hold this into place. Now if you're technically minded I hope you'll be understanding all this but if not or to save yourself the hassle, I know a man who can make a lead including the correct fitments for you! His name is Alan, he's very helpful and his email is hifilinks@btinternet.com. Just mention what you want to do, mention you want the same he did one for Rob at RASWills@aol.com about a month ago and I think he should be able to sort you out. It cost me Quote

Maybe a stupid question but how do I get the sound from the dvd player through the cars main audio system so I don't have to use the wireless headsets? If it has a 3.5mm audio jack output to the headphone transmitter you could use one of these: http://www.itreviews.co.uk/hardware/h1138.htm The sounds not brilliant but does the job. Quote
Rwills Posted June 3, 2008 Author Report Posted June 3, 2008 Hi There is nowhere to plug an FM transmiter into. If you wanted to use an FM transmitter you would have to make up a similar lead using a female 3.5mm jack to plug the transmitter in and wire that into the back of the DVD unit. You would also need to power it! If you're going to go to all that trouble you may as well get a decent and consistent sound by running a cable straight into the AUX in. cheersRob Quote
mark the harp Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Thanks Rob - I asked this same question and kept getting suggestions about FM transmitters, which wasn't helpful! Thank you - that's absolutely the answer I've been looking for too. It is an amazing oversight not to have enabled this on the DVD option seeing as it's sooooo expensive. Mark Quote
mark the harp Posted May 23, 2009 Report Posted May 23, 2009 Just an update from Rob's helpful post - I just ordered and fitted one of these leads today, and it's great. My lead was 18.48 inc postage (his prices have gone up!!) and I had to change one of the pins (thanks to Rob's diagram I knew what was wrong straight away). Very good quality lead - just shame about the silly mistake with one of the pins in the wrong hole. Hiding the lead is easy. Connect the DVD end and hide the wire to the DVD player underneath a front passenger mat. You have to get it into the glove compartment and the best way to get the wire in is to get one of those whitish curtain wire things that you thread through net curtains (it's a long thin spring with a white covering) and poke it up from underneath under the LH side of the glove compartment near the front. You can then grab the other end of the white thing through the hole inside the top left side of the compartment. Then attach the 3.5mm plug to the curtain wire (a rubber band will do) and pull that up into the glove compartment. Once it's in there, it can stay plugged in with the compartment door closed, and you just put everything into the compartment with the wire pushed to the back. In normal use you'll never see it. Great stuff. Definitely worth while. You just select AUX when you want to have the DVD output on speakers (you can still use the headphones so you've not disabled any options, just given yourself an extra one). In use you may wish to change the fader settings on the radio so the sound goes to the rear speakers, otherwise movies with lots of car chases could be a bit alarming. This should have been part of the Ford Multimedia installation - amazing that they didn't include this. Quote
lynchman Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 Hi,I have just bought a Galaxy and found your very useful article I just need to implement it (4 girls fighting over 2 headphones is not a good place to be !) Having looked at the back of the unit from the back seats there appears to be 3 blocks of connectors and it is the middle one that is not used.Is this the one that you connect into ? Also is pin 1 top left as you look from the rear ? Any confirmation you can give is appreciated Thanks Hi Thanks for all the requests for a solution, I'm just sorry it's taken me so long to post. Theo Cupier Posted May 1, 2010 Report Posted May 1, 2010 If all you're trying to do is add extra headphones to the DVD player (and I know that was not the OP's question) can you not either buy extra headphones from Ford or a pair of these wireless infra-red headphones from Maplin? They seem to work on many other in-car DVD systems. Quote
lynchman Posted May 2, 2010 Report Posted May 2, 2010 Thanks,Buying extra headphones is an option but I also like the idea of playing it through the car sound system using the aux cable Quote
