likely to be a dirty turbo vane problem - usually happens over 3k revs engine detects a pressure/boost problem and ecu puts it in to 'limp home mode'. Will reset on restart until problem is detected again

see here for diy solution !!

IIRC - if you get the fault codes read this is the code you are looking for

17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation

what about them addatives u can put in with your fuel will that keep it clean or are they crap

Not crap, but not any use for keeping the turbo clean,as those additives are for fuel lines, the turbo only deals with air.

Clearly not up for the stripping down of the turbo then? don't blame you,as its just as lickly you have a sticking actuator or you n75 valve is faulty,or a vacuum pipe has a leak, the list goes on and on.

I would start by doing a search of turbo faults in the archives and seeing which ones you feel you can check out yourself.start with the simplier ones vacuum pipes, n75 valve and actuator ect ect before worrying about the internals of the turbo. if the turbo is indeed the problem, theres a place at nottingham that reconditions them for around

No revs and a high idle could be the fly-by-wire throttle potentiometer?

If the unit fails, revs are raised so you can limp to a garage.

Easy VNT clean is:

Unbolt CAT from turbo, spray 'carbon remover' (Mr Muscle or barbecue cleaner) into hotside, work vnt rod/lever for 10 mins, leave for an hour, spray more and work lever again, mop up, bolt CAT back on, go for drive with your fully unstuck VNT mechanism.

I agree with ini. More likely to be the throttle potentiometer. In limp mode due to turbo problems the engine still responds to the throttle and you can still manage 50-60mph on the level.

A diagnostic lead and VAG-COM would give you an accurate diagnosis. Should cost less that
